The games with the most advertising, and usually produced by the biggest corps do OK. One flop, as you call it, came before WOW, and did well until the launch of WOW. It also lasted over 7 years, and was only shut down due to EA's dealings with LA.

Some of those "flops" were just bad games, were very limited, or had no depth at all. It wasn't necessarily the gameplay style.

We can discuss WOW clones, and we'll see that none of them do anywhere near as well as WOW. None, zero, nada. Why? The most likely reason is that companies want to copy WOW, yet not offer the same content, or even a decent amount of interesting content.

Outside of class stories, what does SWTOR offer in gameplay terms? Same ole same ole, but less of it, and it's even more linear than WOW.
This. Most developers are afraid to deviate from WoW's template, but they don't do a good enough job copying it either. Either they need to truly embrace the notion of being a carbon copy of WoW, or they need to innovate. SWTOR did what most others did: the copied poorly, added one innovation that does not come close to making up for what they didn't copy, and then engaged in deceptive marketing to sell the game. Not good enough.

As for WoW clones in general, if WoW does an overhaul and either updates their graphics and game play or develops a WoW 2, they will be forgotten and flushed away in one swirl with the rest of the fecal matter. Hell, the only reason I don't like WoW is the graphics. I couldn't get over the way the game looked and never progressed far enough playing it to be upset about anything else. A lot of your MMO history is incorrect, and your reporting of present day facts is poorly researched.
Edited because the devs appear to have fixed at least 80% of the crap that was pissing me off.

For a new game in 2012 that is horrible
First, I get quoted as making the PS1 comment. Then, me correcting that person gets quoted again as having made the comment.../sigh. I give a rats arse about anything dealing with The Secret World. My post was to comparing advertisements from 2 other games knocking WoW.

If WoW had started in today's market, they would not have the share they do now.

That said, they are bleeding more subs, in numbers, than any other game has.

They had their day, are losing it, and the numbers show it.

Blizzard's name is not what it once was and neither are their games.

Blizzard did improve and incorporate many aspects from many games and were lucky to choose well and hit the market at the right time, a fluke of luck.

Blizzard has also over time destroyed much of what was MMO gaming.

Not in Asia... just in N. America/Europe.

I know, I am saying compared to OLDER mmos, it's way more action based.

Yeah if you going to compare it to CoD or Contra. It's not. But I'm talking about compared to other games in the MMO gerene at the time

the most action based MMO failed big time and was also one of my favs DCUO i could play it with my PS3 pad

any game where you can use a pad will always be more action packed no one liked the RPS combat style but mainly i think that was because they kept getting there asses handed to them in PvP because they couldn't adapt to twich based combat instead of rotation based combat

This is actually true... I can't really think of a successful Action based MMO....
