I would not call that a "flop".
It was on life support within months of release. If they turned it around that is impressive but it was complete fecal matter when it was released.

Conjecture, OP.

The games with the most advertising, and usually produced by the biggest corps do OK. One flop, as you call it, came before WOW, and did well until the launch of WOW. It also lasted over 7 years, and was only shut down due to EA's dealings with LA.

Some of those "flops" were just bad games, were very limited, or had no depth at all. It wasn't necessarily the gameplay style.

We can discuss WOW clones, and we'll see that none of them do anywhere near as well as WOW. None, zero, nada. Why? The most likely reason is that companies want to copy WOW, yet not offer the same content, or even a decent amount of interesting content.

Outside of class stories, what does SWTOR offer in gameplay terms? Same ole same ole, but less of it, and it's even more linear than WOW.

Flop? Compared to what? They are at least still profitable and operational....

Games that don't follow the WoW template not only "flop", but they cease to function and often take the studio and company down into bankruptcy with it.

Whether it be SWTOR, Rift, Aion, Lineage, EverQuest II, they all follow the world of warcraft model. Now, lets look at the mmos that did not follow the WoW model. They all flopped at the retail market and nobody bought them. The matrix online, shadowbane, world war ii online, TERA, Tabula Rasa, All Points Bulletin, Star Wars Galaxies, and most recently, The Secret World. The MMO graveyard is filled with MMOs that deviate from the norm.

So when gamers cry "we want something other than WoW". you know they are lying. They talk a big game but when it comes time to buy said product, they never do. They all want WoW.
Thats not entirely true SWG lasted just over 10 yrs to me thats not a Failure. Also FFXI did very well even after WoW launched. I played WoW when it first came out and left after a week because of one simple reason IT WAS TOO EASY!. Also because of many of the elements in TOR you cant compare it to WoW or to other MMO's for that matter. This is the first MMO since FFXI that I have actually enjoyed and provided a decent challenge for me WoW couldnt even do that. So when I said I wanted something other than WoW I meant it. And TOR is very different from WoW in everyway.

That change was super important and gave WoW the head started it needed to be come the power house it is now
Actually, WoW is successful because it is supported by the Asian virtual item and currency retail market...

Nobody buying the game, resulting in a 50% drop in Funcom's stock price.... yeah, it flopped.

Yeah that the reason, /faceplam

Because every single MMO couldn't have the same thing if people were actually playing them.

Rift is not a flop. However it is NOT sitting on 1.5mil subscriptions. Instead it has a respectable 250k or so.

No, you also need internet cafe license accounts... your currency also needs to be valued enough by the consumer to be purchased with real money. Alot factors go into it, but the most important thing is the internet cafe licensed accounts, which lead to the millions of users in Asia and the growth of the virtual item and currency sales.
