What's the point now?

Im on the same boat actually. Canceled my sub and am back to WoW (though surprisingly enjoying it after such a long time away). Looking forward to MoP even. I planned to give it another month while I finish the last 2 stories I hadnt done yet and say farewell to guildies but ive kinda lost almost all motivation and ambition towards this game and am signing on a quarter of the time now.
My case is the Complete Opposite. I was going to let my sub run out because I saw no future for SWTOR with the subscription model, population will continue to drop, the game will be put on maintenence mode and we will never get to see any kind of expansion or new content, just like it happened to Warhammer Online.

Now that the game has announced they are going to go F2P, I think the game has a chance to recover like many other MMOs did.

Getting banned will cost you pretty much the same then. Considering as to how they'll still need to buy the box. And currently for about 20 Eur you can already buy the box, this price is just going to drop by 25% to around 15 Eur, not much of a difference. Do we currently see a high level of trolling? On the forums sure, but ingame the community aint half bad.

Same goes for gold / credit spammers, they will need to be buying a lot of boxes.

They're still charging $15 for the game due to the copies that are still currently at stores. Give it a few months after F2P and the download itself will be free as well. They just don't want to leave these places with tons of boxed copies that they can't sell.

Mwuah, partially agree. There probably will come a complete F2P client at some point. But I don't think we'll see the boxes vanish anytime soon. Their presence in stores is "free" publicity.

From what I read of the FAQ the $15 is to move boxes and it is sort of a head start on the subscription side of F2P (the $15 gives a free 30 days) as those players are getting cartel coins (not sure if they do for the free 30) and that when F2P launches you can just get the client free without needing to be a subscriber first (which is what the box does) since all trial accounts (free to 15) will full free 2 play automatically.

The $15 to join regardless of free or subscriber is something I though they might do, but further reading suggests it is just to sell boxes left on the shelves, or get people to join ahead of the conversion.

Has it been verified that the F2P players will be on the same servers? I haven't been keeping up with the news thoroughly. It seems to me the launcher is already segmented to be between subscribers (swtor) and new options that are to be added

How many ranked matches are you going to get in when half your normal team goes to the F2P model?

Sure, F2P will give EA more money in the bank (if other, lesser games are anything to go by), but what's the point now for us players? Honestly, when I try to play Lotro, DND, etc, I always get that same feeling. That "what's the point?" feeling. Now, since the announcement, I get the same feeling with SWTOR already. All drive to get through my Sorcerer's main quest, or level up my Scoundrel healer just disappeared. At this point, I may not even come back for F2P to finish some of the class stories. Just like with the other F2P games, the drawing power of an active, civil community just goes out the window. Heck, I fired up DnD for the first time ever, had some guy try to invite me to his guide about 8 times in a row, kept calling me a noob and I had to put him on ignore. F2P games are troll bait. Good luck to all fighting said trolls while trying to level their characters in the future....
If you are paying now (and others are as well) you can make the safe assumption that all people looking for end game content will continue to sub. If they don't and they buy it ala carte, then they are wasting money away.

The game isn't converting to F2P, it is offering a F2P option.

If we want this game to survive in the modern market, there has to be an appeal to gamers who normally wouldn't sub to the game. Its opening the door. We need that in today's environment. Many folks simply won't try something if they know they have to spend $15 a month to play it. But give them a free trial run and they might change their minds.

That was a mistake in coding. It was for the public test realm option. It was recently coded back out.

YOou can safely assume ALL players will be on the servers we have now. They are not going to be segregated into F2P communities. That would be a terrible mistake. We don;t need to fracture the community any more. You have to let free players play with regular folks if you want to build community and support the game. Its a basic rules of thumb to use when trying to entice people to spend more money.

Alternatively, the developers can make the game worth 50 cents a day. Much newer, smaller games than WoW are doing this successfully right now.

It's about what the developer wants to or is capable of doing, because the market will (and does!) support the subscription model. Clearly EA wants cash shop because re-creating the SIMS in the SW universe is easier than producing MMO content and features.

Like I know deep down that there is no actual goal anymore and that I won't be playing for long anyway. Again, that whole "what's the point" feeling. Again, I'm not saying that it should be like this for everyone. It's just how I personally feel about F2P games.

Still though... the class story lines are the best part of the game. If we get to play those for free, I don't see why anyone would continue subbing.
So it's all in your head. F2P is taboo because the business model began with those crappy browser based MMOs. This is not such a game. Again, it's all in your head.
