Why did SWTor choose the Heroengine?

Hi!

Well yea, I'd like to hear some inputs on idea why they took this engine At first I thought it's because it's hard to render 20+ individual characters at the same time and the Heroengine could take it. But after playing Ilum we all know that this isn't true. HD 6870, I5-2500k, 12 GB Ram and an SSD gave me 5-15 FPS.

Is it because it looks amazing? Well nope, it doesn't. it looks really bad.I mean, Tera Online also can't handle 20+ characters but at least it looks freaking amazing. Also Battlegrounds work fine in Tera Korea. No FPS-problems around. SWTor looks kinda bad, it looks like WoW pretty much with the difference that WoW has better lighting, shadows and less pixels.

So, why did Bioware took the Heroengine, what you think? Money? Star Wars with Unreal Engine would have been freaking amazing.

Cheaper than hiring real engineers to build a proper engine, and allows them to spend more time on "story" than a playable game.

I think The Elder Scrolls Online is also using the heroengine.....so I can only see bad things to come from this.
Belgoth's Beacon ----> The Fatman ----> Prophecy of the Five ----> The Ebon Hawk

Always be who you are, not what the galaxy wants you to be

Someday we will be able to talk facts in this forum. Someday. I believe in a future where people are smart enough not to make comments like this and actually carry on a conversation.

Hey! I can hope, right?

Fact is the game needed to be equal or better than the competition's current stuff out there,no more no less.It needed to have all of the options that have been cultivated over the years by others, the expected level of development as seen in others.Far, far to many things that were not simply in at launch that should have been.Closed beta they were told so

I don't understand the issues with Illum, I'm running it at 60fps with no problems at all and everything set to max. I don't get the complaints.

Also they chose the engine because at the time they started development the engine was "wicked-cool bro", but when it was released it became "lame yo".

The issue comes when you have more then 20 people around you it does lag bad even on high end rigs. Sure in Battlefield 3 with max graphics and 60 guys running around their is no lag. But in this game their is. And It can't be blamed on it being an MMO with complex data blah blah, because it aint like this in WoW, Aion, Guild Wars 2 BETA, LOTOR, or STO.

I'm tired of lagging in fleet. This is the only game I have that lags, and it looks worse then all my other 2010+ games. No good reason for this.
