The guy's incredibly selfish, you should probably put him on your ignore list or something and warn your friends and guildies not to group with him. I could understand if nobody could use the pistol and he asked before rolling if he could take it for his companion. But what he did is just ninja looting in my book.

When you companion takes up 1 of the 4 available spots as the group healer or tank, then you may roll need for him/her. You can not roll need for your brother who was offline either.
QFT - if the companion has been part of the group and actively contributed in the FP run only then may the player call need on it - this has been set as our guild policy too.

I think eventually everyone gets a companion that could essentially use just about anything you can pick up. So with this thinking then everyone just needs everything.

To me that is just wrong. I suppose if your companion is actually being used during the flashpoint and they can use the item then ok need it. Otherwise if your not using your companion atm it is just greed.

I can tell you if someone rolls need for a companion that is not being used in the flashpoint I will drop group right then and there.

My vote would be greed for companions, only need for yourself.

I personally think need should only be rolled for your main character, and not for companions... I called the guy out on it, then after the instance he was flaming me in general chat for being a rage quitter or some such.

That's the biggest load of horse dung I've heard in a long time. Players ALWAYS get priority, and only if NOBODY needs the item, then it's ok to ASK if you can roll need for your companion. Anything else is just being greedy and not respectful of your group. At least, that's my opinion on the matter.
There is no emotion (except Love, that's ok); there is peace. There is no ignorance; there is knowledge. There is no passion; there is serenity. There is no chaos; there is harmony. There is no death; there is the Force.

They should have gone with a roll/pass system where you either roll on something or pass to allow others to have it.
I don't know... maybe put a little effort into it? My companion has the Kaas comendation gold vibroblade and a full set of blue heavy armor I crafted his ugly arse. He prolly has better gear than me. But then again, he's the one getting hit 90% of the time.

I think I'll accept this as an exception to the rule I put forth earlier.

Ninja. Plain and simple.
