I'm getting GW2 for sure, it seems like it's going to be pretty good, but when you see all the hype about it being the next coming of the MMORPG, just remember that the people who are hyping themselves up like that are the same people who hyped themselves up over SWTOR back when SWTOR was hailed as the thing that will kill WOW, so let's wait until after GW2 game is actually out before we start singing it's praises too much.

Didn't happen to look at the date at the top, did you?

June 15, 2012.

Maybe they were talking about the F2P until level 15, because that's already in effect.

I agree with you there. To be honest..I hope they make it because it's so much of a fair item shop.If everyone could learn from them, then the f2p model would not be viewed with such hate. And no you don't pay for any content in Aion's market, not even bag or bank space which is highly unusual for a f2p game. But don't take our word for it,check it out yourself. And try the game out before you decide to trash it.
I'm certainly having fun playing Old Republic and would still play after f2p and show my support by buying some stuff from them, assuming that they get the cash shop items right.

Unless BW did something foolish and copy Wizard 101's F2P model, you won't have to. Look at CoH. Since they've switched to a hybrid model they've been able to produce completely free content updates at a faster pace. There is a small amount of content on the cash store; however, if you choose to maintain a subscription that's remains free to you.

On the otherhand, the devs thought it was a good idea to reskin WoW. Hopefully their judgement's improved.

It's funny how they're still running this story based on one pulled interview given a week ago. The guy didn't even say F2P is being considered, just that subscription is a difficult market, but so is F2P.

F2P is a pretty meaningless term these days anyway.

What matters is what you end up paying for and how the game is structured to make you want to pay for stuff. Make no mistake, going F2P does not magically make a game better, or free, or even cheaper. It is entirely about how the game's business model ends up being structured. Equally, make no mistake that somehow games that go F2P are doing it for the user's benefit - in the majority of successful F2P conversions, the game ends up milking more money from existing customers than from when they were on subscription. Ask a lot of LOTRO subscribers for their experience, or City of Heroes. It's not all sunshine & roses.

As for GW2, you have noticed the concerns over the cash shop pricing, right? $3-$4 for an hour's XP boost, for example, or the carefully constructed items that cry out 'inconvenienced in game? for this low low price of a few dollars, we can make that go away'. By the by, GW2 strictly isn't F2P - you have to buy the game; they ran that business model for GW1 before F2P became popular. True F2P is sign up & go, e.g. World of Tanks.

F2P is almost always successful - for the business. Whether it's successful for the customer, by way of providing an equivalent rich high-content fun experience that doesn't feel like you ought to be handing over your wallet every five minutes is up for debate. We each find our own fun in our own way I guess.
For 2000 Cartel Coins, a year-old game breaking bug may get fixed.
For $20, an epic death scene for your character is unlocked to end your overly expensive class story. Subscribers pay $10.

Add that one individual case of mentioning of F2P then add that in with the one other case where they talk about F2P then the other case they talk about F2P and the other and the other and guess what. They are talking about F2P.

The reason they are talking about F2P is because as of now they dont have enough subs to break even according to their 500k needed. So they are just looking at ways to make as much money as they can before the game dies.
If this game is so great then why do so many people that love the game spend all their time in the forums?

Because the free-to-play model takes over the game. Take LotRO, for example. It was a good game before the conversion to f2p, and even a bit after. Yet now everything in the game is designed to push players into the store. For example: before f2p, upon deconstructing a legendary item, any relics that had been placed in it were returned to the player. After f2p, players must buy a scroll from the cash-shop to get those relics back. And the grind to get top-end relics just happened to get ridiculously longer and more expensive.

Also, every screen in the game has "LotRO STORE" stamped somewhere on it, often in multiple places. Having the store constantly shilled at you gets annoying very quickly.

Another example is STO. Even when it was a cash-shop/subscription hybrid, virtually every desirable addition to the game was only available from the cash shop for a fee; that was in addition to the monthly sub cost.

A counter-example: despite struggling, Warhammer Online has NOT gone f2p because the developers don't feel there is any fair way they can monetize the game without turning it into the ubiquitous "pay-to-win".

The point of all this is, even if the game doesn't initially start out that way, the cash-shop eventually overwhelms the rest of the game. So while a conversion to f2p may be good for the accountants (and I'm skeptical that it's a sustainable model in the long-term, as the cash-shop becomes more and more of a necessity and drives away players), it is invariably bad for the game.
Both those FTP games you mentioned do have a sub also if you wish to go that route. LOTRO has made more profits after it went FTP than it did before. And the FTP model has been successful for Arena Net in the long run. How long have they had GW out? The bottom line for any company is profits. The video however is a older one and I would not worry about TOR going FTP anytime soon.
Trust is something which is earned.

People seem confused. GW2 is not F2P, it is B2P which is another completely separate model.

The problem with F2P games is that they make you pay $$ for content and power. In a B2P game you always get access to 100% of the content (sans expansions, which everyone in every model pays for) and the only thing in the cash shop is cosmetic.

Games that go F2P inevitably offer content and power in the cash shop which is what people hate so much.
