I got into the gw2 beta a couple of months ago and played in two of them and i have to agree with the op. I thought gw1 was a horrible mmo and i wasnt very excited about gw2 but all the hype finaly got to me and i thought oh well it will be ok to play since its free. But after those two betas i really found nothing appealing about the game at all.

The only two things i can say i like about the game is its better than gw1 and its free, but to me the hype was just way way over blown (even more than swtors) yeah its an ok game and im sure it will do fine since it is free but no way would i play it over a AAA mmo like wow, rift or swtor.

I am really looking forward to GW2 -- the game is just gorgeous, the character creation is wonderful, the gear/aesthetics are great, and I really enjoy the way dynamic events work. Though I miss the cutscenes and immersive story from TOR.

I also have fun playing TOR right now! But I like it for different reasons. The story is very entertaining and the cutscenes/voiceovers are just amazing, plus it is, y'know, Star Wars. Though I miss the good aesthetic sense and ease of customizing my character from GW2.

So, I will play both, at least for awhile.
i agree two very different games, i will also be playing both cause after all GW2 is F2P so no need to cancel my ToR sub to play it.

I find myself thinking that way with most f2p games, but im always wrong. In the end i either end up not liking them or they start charging me more money than a p2p would cost me.

So ive adopted a new philosophy, "If its not worth paying for , its probably not worth playing." or maybe "If its not worth my money, its not worth my time" is better.

well only thing to spend more money on in GW2 is cosmetic type stuff. or the ocasional expansion that all MMO's have. but i prefer the philosophy "the best things in life are free".

edit: or this case Free to Play

Yea, I preordered GW2 and tried the beta... And my overwhelming reaction was, that's it?

I thought combat (pvp or otherwise) seemed simplistic, at least compared to my sentinel with 20 regularly used hot keys + a few click buttons. Graphics are underwhelming, and the plot was ridiculous. ("I hear you want to become a mighty warrior! Go get me a pelt!")

I'm still going to try the game, especially since I bought the darn thing.... But at this point, I'm skeptical.

The karma is used to buy things to NPC vendors, not only gear, but is perfectly possible live from loot, or buy gear as good ans NPC's gear in the market since, as far as I know, crafters can craft anything an better than NPC's stuff. In terms of progression gear is not as important as it is in SWTOR. In fact at level 6 you can join PVP because your gear is authomatically upgraded to level 80, also your health and skills, the only difference with anohter player is the sets of skills because you are limited to the unlocked skills.
GW2 has the same PVP concept as GW, nobody should be uber because of the gear thus everybody has the same stats in their gears. It's a skill based game, not a gear based game as it is SWTOR.

Karma is used to buy consumable siege weapons in WvWvW and guild perks that buff you in........ you guessed it WvWvW so the guilds with the most money pumped into Karma boosts will have what?

The auto 80 and set gear only applies to the arena type pvp (don't know the official name), doesn't apply to the WvWvW or of course Pve. There is still some gear grinds at max level as you will probably want to maximize a few stats for your build. To do that you'll of course need to find the right gear. But once you official to that point then the gear grind is obsolete. Which is IMO a good thing it's the main selling point for me so far if I decide to buy the game.
