Why do you not play ranked PvP?

I think once season 1 gets underway we'll see a lot of people returning to rwz's.

But yeah, for me, I do fine while I'm playing on a team with guildies. But I'm still learning MMO style PvP as this is my first MMO, and I've been playing since launch. At this point I just don't think I'm competitive ranked wz material. So I'm still trying to get better and trying to yield good results consistently while queing individually.
+1. in every regard.

I'm happy we have preseason if for no other reason than to be able to queue 8-man teams. Even if you are getting curb-stomped, it is far nicer to suffer this with 7 other guildies in voice chat and whom you will play with again tomorrow than with 4 randoms you have no control over.

Only having played MMO since January and PvP for less time I consider myself a n00b that is learning. Still, it will be nice when BW implements cross server and a match making algorithm that tries to avoid obvious one sided victories (e.g. > 2000 rated 8-man in fully augmented WH gear vs unrated players in mixed gear).

EDIT: I realize the above is a bit off topic as I am playing rated when ever I can get even an 8-man PUG together. Sorry to be positive in a QQ thread.

Am I aware of certain exploits/hacks that can (and I stress the word can) be used? Of course, I'm not oblivious to these being IG, but in rated PvP and the amount of players I game with/against...it's been a non-issue. The player claiming Fatman has an abundant issue with this, has no idea what they're talking about.
First, I hate playing against you Pistols . I'm sure you guys have a good laugh when ever you play against me.

As for hacking claims, there is a simple solution:
  1. get fraps
  2. record each WZ you play
  3. after the WZ, if you do not think there was hacking, delete the recording.
  4. if you do think there was hacking, post to youtube and ask for other opinions.

Without a video, the few legitimate claims of hacking can not be separated from the chaff of bogus claims.

you may be seeing a real hack but we'll never know until you make a video.

---

If we assume the most highly rated players are NOT hacking, then these folks (who know the game mechanics inside out) are best qualified (among players) to evaluate hacking claims. So how about a poll: post your perception of how much hacking goes on and your current rated WZ rating.

1. Server transfers came too late, and almost everyone I played with quit the game. Since transfering I've joined a pretty good pvp guild that runs ranked on a nightly basis and has some success (most people are rated between 1700 and 2000) but since I don't play a FOTM class, and since I'm one of the "new guys" in the guild, I spend most nights sitting out, occassionally being brought in as a backup.

.

Ignoring this aspect, I also have the wrong class. I am a shadow tank with two sets of augmented war hero gear (DPS and survivor) and even though I do 400k dmg and 400k+ protection on an alderaan where the middle turret is not capped my class is useless.

Another aspect that makes me stay away from ranked PVP is a certain guild on TOFN. This guild, whom I shall not name, has openly admitted they are using exploits against guilds 'they do not like'' and we have been wronged by them on voidstar everytime we played against them. My guild and I does not condone this type of behaviour and BioWare should take measures.
Your a shadow and you think your class is useless? Bad does not even begin to describe you.

Then they explained specifically some of the programs they believe STILL work, including older programs. Most are speed hack in nature. but allow you to obviously do abnormal amounts of DPS in melee range.

I don't see them as much in normal warzones, I guess because they are too busy cheating in rateds.
You and your guild are just bad. I have seen once or twice people hacking in this game and I've pvped so much. The "speed hacks" you bad always claim is actually the team using improved transcedence, or some other talent that increases speed temporarily. (focus guardians get 40% speed after using zealous leap, snipers get 40% speed after their stun, etc)

Our combat sentinel always pops trans at the start of every match, and will pop trans when we rotate to an off node to reinforce it, or when we get the ball. Yep we're speed hacking.

The problem when it comes to ranked PvP for someone like me is that it emphasizes the aspects of PvP that I'm not particularly inspired by -- the competition; the desire to feel superior to, or victorious over, other people; the ego boosts; the achievement of status and prestige. I'm not looking for things to boost my own ego in real life, and in a way that is all that ranked WZs are meant to achieve. For me, the ideal game would actually be a PvE one where the content and game play was as intense and challenging and fun as PvP game play tends to be.

I understand in Korea video games are actually played as televised sports, with the equivalent of professional athletes devoting their every breathing moment to training, practice, and mastery of the games. I suppose that is the logical conclusion of ranked PvP and imagine some players would love that (and others would enjoy watching them). Fortunately or unfortunately, I don't think most players want to get that serious (at least in the States). That is the problem with ranked PvP, it requires that you become very serious. But being very serious is of the "real life" domain, and as such is inherently contrary to the gaming experience for most people.
You pretty much listed most of the reasons why people do anything competitive in real life. I don't see why a game should be any different when it comes to competition.

If your opponents are good you'd never have direct proof they're hacking because you don't need anything outrageous to achieve a very significant advantage in terms of speed. You'd keep your speed somewhere around 30-50% (and higher when the enemy cannot possibly see you, like beginning fo WZs) and since speed hacks still respect snares/roots, you can take all the video you want but it's going to be extremely hard to prove a guy who has a 40% perma speed boost but is snared 30% of the time is really speed hacking because he'd look about 10% faster than anyone else, which can be covered by even passive talents

To answer the OP:

When my server died, my guild died as well so I took a break and played other games for a bit. When I came back there was a new tier of gear and augments added to basically every slot so I put my main's PvP on hold(was full BM before 1.2 and my break). So I am currently levelling an alt to make the augment kits, as well as a republic alt to be ready when Hk-51 can be found. In a couple of months I'll probably mess around in the ranked game, should give me time to find a new empire guild and augment my stuff.
