What happens if you DON'T transfer?

My wife and I will be the last two people left respectively on Rubat Crystal and Sith Wyrm if they force us to transfer at some point. I have no interest in losing the names I preordered and got early access for the specific reason of saving those names. I've had the same names in MMOs going back to UO/EQ.

You know what is funny? Mythic helped to make this game and Daoc a MMO that was released back in 2001 they already did this when they clustered servers. They added a hyphen and the server name after your name for all characters so everyone got to keep their names. Why they didn't do this in this game is mind boggling.

We have at least one more round of transfers ("free promotional transfers") and then almost certainly paid transfers.

After some period of time my guess is that they will force you to move when they merge the origin servers to start shutting some of them down. No info on how long this will be but my guess is maybe 6 months or so.

Like Bulwyf, my character names are very important to me AND my wife. We both have been using the same set of character names for years and picked low pop servers back when we got the game back in december so we could have the names we wanted.

We primarily play together and are typically happy even if no one else is around. (before someone says "then why play MMO's" ... if someone can tell me a way for me and my wife to play a WOW or SWTOR like video game cooperatively without an MMO ... then I'm all ears.)

now .... whether bio ware wants to call it this or not ... its a FORCED transfer ... they may be treating it like an opportunity ... but if ultimately they are going to shut down our server and make us move ... it is FORCED ...

I've been looking at the population stats for the places they are offering and some were set as HEAVY even in the middle of the night ... so that means they are going to force us to move to a server with lots of people ... so that means lots of stupid nonsense again ... and they are going to probably force us to change our character names ... which are very important names to us ...

At the very least, bio ware needs to offer people some kind of compromise so they can keep their names ... particularly for people who play on RP servers who ACTUALLY RP and their characters are more than just 'stats'. Playing my character with a different name would be like if they had decided to change Luke Skywalkers name between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Can you imagine him coming in on scene and being named Aiden Starkiller or something ... and we are all going 'what... where is luke? thats the same actor as luke ... but he's got a different name? what the heck?' .... the story would be broken. It would be a mess. Star wars would have bombed and there would have been no SWTOR! Well ... maybe not.

Bringing it a little closer to home ... it would be like going from one part of the game to the next and having a character like Darth Malgus or Satele Shan suddenly being named something totally different. It would ruin the story and the continuity of the game and people would be like 'what the heck'? ... and it would probably lead people to think bio ware were morons and leave the game shaking their heads. Bioware knows that and doesn't do stupid things like change their characters name in the middle of the story. But now they are making us change OUR characters names in the middle of OUR story.

I realize our particular characters and our character's story are not as important to Lucas as Luke Skywalker or as important to Bioware as their chararacter's stories ... but these characters ARE that important to us ... they are OUR star war characters stories ... they are our Luke Skywalker ... our Satele Shan ... and the point of playing a game like this, for some people at least, is to get into the star wars universe and have our OWN star wars story about OUR characters ... I followed the progress of SWTOR for a long time, excited for it to come out so my wife and I could play star wars characters together in a 3d video game environment ... and it came out and we loved it ... it was perfect ... but now, with this crap ... sigh. I'm sure my opinion is the minority ... but that doesn't make it less valuable ... just less heard.

At any rate... there is my rant about this. Hopefully Bio ware offers a solution for this kind of concern in the future ... we can't be the only ones who are unhappy about renaming.

interestingly enough,ive never once,in the entirety of my 10 or so years in various mmos..had a problem with either char names being taken during transfers,or picking a name in the first place...

why?because most of my character names arent in english...and i have a maddeningly convoluted system for doing so....so essentially,in this matter,im invincible

Unfortunately, our names aren't as common as 'bob' and 'susan' ... but our characters started out as tabletop rpg and fanfic characters long ago ... so they were not conceived with the intention of being protected in this fashion.

for example...no one on the game has the char name of "khitrost",save for me..why?because its a transliteration of a russian word,it means "operative"...and i named my imperial agent that

i basically take a word meaning something from english..and run it through about 22 different translators until i come up with something that sounds decent as a female name

ok ill try to help you on this,cause even though it aint currently compatible with conflict scenario,the original source can be copied and then re-formatted


since im guessing you have a way better memory than i do (which trust me is a good thing)...think back to exactly what inspired you to come up with your current character name....sum it up in one or two words,and run it through google translate till you find something you like

They will automatically move those that haven't transferred at a specific date in the future.

I am enjoying the unobstructed solo leveling in the meantime till my family guild moves to Harbinger. Also have created yet another smuggler (Yes I love smugglers).
