This post is more of a question than anything.

I am an 8 year vet in City of Heroes, so I come from a game where the level cap has never been raised. Sure, they've introduced content that allows you to raise the level at which you fight, but there's never been a level raise that allowed you to pick new powers or anything.

So, for you folks who've lived through a level cap raise: what can we expect when they raise the level cap? Are the current end-game raids going to just become obsolete and start gathering dust? Will I be able to pick more talents from my skill trees?

I really, really want to be excited about them raising the level cap, but until I know more, I'm more bummed out than excited. The thing is, when I've worked for months to get my gear up to Black Hole/Campaign quality, I dread the thought of just having to resume that grind immediately if, say, the level is raised just a week after I get my last piece. I've had a friend even leave the game because of the level raise. He was told by another friend that, in WoW when they raised the level cap, people started finding green-level gear at 62 that was better than their epic stuff they'd been grinding for at 60.

If I continue my Guardian's story and start getting premium drops from minions that are better than my campaign slotted stuff that I worked so hard to get so I could look however I wanted...well, that would be the end of TOR for me.

City of Heroes really has it worked out, IMO. When they introduced new end-game material, they didn't raise the level cap, but instead just offered a few new powers that you could get if you wanted to, but were by no means essential to playing the game. If I am forced through a level cap to give up my gear because the new, green-level gear that is dropping is essential to continuing the story, that'd be a damn shame. Especially if Bioware continues to allow 4 year-old, blind children to design the new gear they introduce.

But, as I said, I've never witnessed a cap raise. Anyone who has want to elaborate on what you think we might be able to expect?

(Of course I haven't read anything BW has said on the issue, so we can assume any thoughts put here are mere speculation.)

Well as a fellow City of Heroes player let me say... screw that let me say COH is awesome
But after that as an answer to your question (this is solely basd on my experiences in WoW and Everquest) a raised level cap is basicaly a reset. They turn the hamster wheel. Your equipment is useless because you get something better in two levels. You have to learn new levels of crafting which means all the effort into rever engienering just the right whatever you put into it now will have to be done again. The purpose of level cap raises is to set everyone back on the same level so the difference between players doesn't get too big.
Welcome to the hamster wheel.

Short answer. Your gear becomes outdated for the new gear. Yes. Greens even.
"My enemies are those whom I make. Not those who others say they are.
Some consider me a dark Jedi whilst to others a mercenary.
Yet I am no slave to a code nor to an ideal. My will is forever free."

Unlike some other games (WoW in particular) the gear curve in SWTOR is pretty shallow. If they are only adding 5 levels (which seems to be the rumour) then it is probably only the lowest level of end game gear that will be invalidated. The best PvE gear that you get on the way to level 55 will still be lower than the Columi gear sets. Its only some of the daily comms gear and the Tionese gear that you will be able to skip past.

So what will probably happen is that you won't need to grind dailies or HM Flashpoints but will be able to start with OPs and HM Ops and then the new Nightmare mode OPS for the new best gear. So you will be running much of the current end game content but at a harder difficulty setting.

If it's anything like WoW, then be prepared to toss away your old gear for the stupid basic crap you fin in the new areas and grind the same ops over and over because all the previous ones are obsolete.

for what the Devs have say, its not like wow.. where your shiny epics and even some legendary go to the trash with the new level cap... lets hope its true and that they can finaly do something different that wow. that will be a great thing for SWTOR.

also, hope they use this new cap for update the crew skills and make them worth and useful in different ways.. all of them not only Bionchem...

Some prior developer commentary on it seems to indicate that they are trying to balance it so that operations and whatnot won't become obsolete. I think 5 levels is a true community mental fabrication, and is only there because that's the way some other games have done it. It could be as little as a couple, pretty easily.

However, if it is 5, it wouldn't shock me to learn that columi grade is the new daily gearset(max level +1), and black hole is the new "columi" grade (max level +6), with Rakata being the new Tionese.

Truly though, I think that in this case, you are unlikely to see any current group level endgame gear become obsolete by questing greens or blues. Columi MAY get replaced by random purple world drops, though even that might be a stretch.

That 5 levels is a rumour, we have heard that they are adding 1 planet so it could be as low as 2-3 extra levels.

Hmmm...well I'm going to wait until it happens to cry foul, but I really hope it works like some of you have said, where we are still on the higher end of the gear progression if we have Campaign stuff.

All this is just a smokescreen to keep you subbed longer so they can take more of your money while keeping you on the endless grind of the hamster wheel w/o adding any more new real content. Hell, they can't stop breaking the game every week, i dread to see what happens even in 1.4 *eep*
