Why not just use an alt code, keep your name, add some flare. Hope you get over it..

Honestly OP if your name is so important to your identity, you should try coming up with more original names.

I didn't start playing SWTOR until 3 or 4 months after launch and none of the names I wanted were taken on any server I played on.

I would love to see William Shatner reading the OP. Just imagine it:

My.. i-DENTITY... is all I HAVE...... if I loose it.... I HAVE no-THING.

Oh nos!

use alt codes problem solved. Shaydé, Shaydè, Shàyde, etc whichever you like to use.
Annihilation Marauder // Watchman Jedi Sentinel
Blind Aggression // Aftermath

It all boils down to the one factor in why I would continue to play an MMO over any other game. My attachment to my characters.

Sure, TOR doesn't have a ton of customization options, custom housing, etc... but what it does have let me create my identity. My name was first and foremost, I rushed to get to the server assigned to me so I could forge that identity. I worked hard to unlock my legacy name. It is WHAT I AM in this game. Otherwise I am just some random toon.

Now with the 15>1 server ratio of mergers, I looked at my destination and all my names are taken except one. Legacy is likely gone too.

So to paraphrase the bard, is a toon, by any other name, just as sweet? Not to me.

So what are my choices? Lose everything I built and move? Or die at the eventual forced server merges?

Sure, TOR didn't handle names well, I get that. Not everyone understands the GENIUS that Cryptic came up with for Champions and STO. If our Legacy name was our identity, merges would be easier to handle. Sure, there might be 1000 Shaydes, but only one with my surname is me. This is nothing but woulda-shoulda-coulda.

Should TOR at least give us a destination choice? Absolutely. Let me find a server that I can get a few characters transferred to intact. That will improve things. Or how about giving us a couple more destination servers? There are queues now, why not open a couple more and give us better options?

I just had to get this out. I'm sure there are a lot of you out there that share my viewpoint. I know most of my guild leadership isn't moving for this VERY REASON. No free pet, or speeder, or other nonsense is going to do.

If we leave we lose our identity. That is all we truly have.
10% of me is on your side, the other 90% blames you for the perceived stereotype (or not so perceived) of the overly emotional, illogically attached D&D/Roleplaying/MMO/Immersion nerd....but my 10% is on your side. Maybe even as high as 25%

This made me laugh out loud.

Back on the subject. There are so many suggestions people have given the OP but I don't think that was the point of this thread. I mean, I do get it, it sucks to have to change your name, but you have a lot of options. Add an apostrophe, add a last name to Shayde, add letters to it... Honestly if people "know" you from your internet legacy that you've left in all your other games played as Shayde, I'm sure if they see "Shayde Greyface" or whatever they will come up to you and say "OMG are you the legendary Shayde I grouped with in Ultima Online in 1998?!" and all will be well in the world. You don't have to go from Shayde to Frank where no one will recognize you. Even from an in-character stand point you can write up a whole reason why Shayde suddenly finds out his last name or is reborn, etc (or goes undercover haha).

I mean, you even mentioned that your kids went through the transfer and were fine with it... Maybe take example out of that if anything.

Wait, you left out the part that makes me care.
Ganking leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to pvp.

If it's really important to you then just wait till the paid transfers come and then go to any server you want.

I can see your point in how the name thing could have been handled better... but they didn't have time for a perfect solution. It was solve it NOW or let the game die. Sometimes you just have to take one for the game you love.

In life, sometimes you really don't come first, sometimes you have to put something larger ahead of yourself. If TOR is a game you have a passion for, and obviously you do or you wouldn't care about your character names, then you just have to accept that the situation isn't perfect but that it's for the greater health of the game.

Personally, the game is so much better on the destination servers, that losing some names (and I'm a heavy RP'er) is an acceptable sacrifice.

The Shayde I know from reading MMORPG.com was nothing short of a tool. I have no clue if this is the same guy, but if it is, I sure wouldnt wanna be known as someone that has cried for yrs cause the PRECioUs got the axe.

Which is a shame.....that guy is a professional writer, and did seem educated. IMO.... His efforts could of been better served than his focus of carrying on about a gaming system that wasnt making a comback. Not in SWG, and certainly not in TOR.

I am, and it was hardly crying, but a focused effort to make sure those responsible paid the price. They have.

I was never looking for sympathy in this thread, I was looking to voice my concerns, and the concerns of people like me. They're out there. I've already gotten messages of support from people who don't want to get flamed here. But it doesn't matter, because I honestly couldn't care about what silly flaming internet e-peen wavers post. As Moaky can attest from that lousy other board.

But to respond to the many "If this is what made you quit, you're stupid" posts. You just don't get it. My identity is a big part of what KEPT ME PLAYING.

With the endgame lacking, new content trickling in at a snail's pace and ZERO social aspects in this game, it was the deciding factor. The small business I created, the guild I was in, my place in the galaxy. Not just me, but my alts as well.

That was why I kept paying. Why I kept playing. Why I'm not going to anymore.
