And ignore the posters here who like to insult and put down those who have a opinion that is not thier's. The whole transfers situation was done very poorly and what would be wrong with several having the same legacy names on a server? Are we saying there should only be one family name of Smith on the whole planet of Earth?
Please don't get my previous post wrong, I do respect the OP's opinion...

I couldn't care less about a character name, and haven't done so for well over a decade. In the grand scheme of things the fact that I give a set of pixels a name doesn't make them all that important.

Pfft. I did not get your previous post wrong. When you respect someone's opinion then you tell them why, but donot try to talk down to them like they are a kid and need to take a break from the game. He does need to unsub I agree and take his money and time away to another MMO. The best way to send a message to any company of your disapproval is to stop giving them money.
Trust is something which is earned.

Then why post here?

What is lacking in your post, and maybe in yourself, is something called "empathy". Might try looking it up and understanding the word.

As for the OP, I too had several toons change names on their great adventure in BW transfer/mergeland. However I just changed them as little as possible. But, I do understand where you are coming from with your history of the names, and if I had the same I might feel the same, good luck where ever you wind up.

I was in a similar position... when the game *launched*

I have been known by my forum handle in real life and across several MMO's (where it was available).

Unfortunately, when I loaded up the game for the 1st time, chose my server, and logged in... I was unable to get my *usual* name. I thought what the hell, lets try to get it as a legacy name. I will admit i am not the fastest leveller in the world, but it was taken.

Both times, I have had to choose something different. But i have still managed to keep a similar theme going across all my characters...

Flip side, my main character is Ennoia (which is kinda fun anyway playing with some Greek people )

So whilst I can understand his position, I do also have to agree with Scorpienne in that it can allow you spread your wings and maybe take a *slight* change in how your characters are named.

I have also suffered something similar happen to me in City of Heroes, when they merged the EU and US playerbases. In this case, it was your global name (identifier for cross server chat/characters, EU and US were separate entities in the 1st place, limited by account as to which side you played on) Here, precedence was given to US account holders if there was a naming clash. There were clashes in the Global namespace, and some people lost out to their own inactive US accounts, other to 5 year+ inactive US accounts. Some people left the game, others adapted and chose an _EU identifier or a totally different name.

If they do ever introduce a global chat system (in particular with Custom Chat Channels), then i feel that there will be other people who will up and leave just because someone else got *their name* 1st... sorry bud, in this case everyone is a special snowflake, and I know it sucks that someone took it, but this is one case where *unique* has to be *unique*.

*shrugs* TL;DR

I empathize with the guy, however I would never quit a game over it.
1) I reject your reality.... and substitute my own
2) Not to be used when upset... will void warranty
3) Stoke me a clipper i will be back for dinner
4) I have seen more intellegence from an NPC AI in TR beta, than from most MMO players.

I dont think the guy you're quoting was bashing the OP, he was just pointing out that he doesnt think of a character name the same way the OP does (thats how i took it anyways). I myself am the same way, a character name just lets my guildies know who to yell at in a raid and it lets me know which one of my characters is which. Of all the reasons to quit playing a game, i put 'name unavailability' as dead last, heck i dont think it would even make the list. Only thing it does is keep me from playing that character for a few more seconds/minutes while i think of a more creative name or i think of which letter i want to double up.
I'm not really a noob...

I sympathize with the OP. My characters that were created during headstart in Warhammer got merged so many times, that I got disgusted and quit...I hope SW:ToR's mergers are not handled as badly as Warhammer's. At least it's not EA....oh wait!

Still, your characters are going to leave their current server one way or another, sooner or later. If your name is too popular, chances are youre screwed either way. May as well transfer and get you perks now.

I get the felling something is going to happen by the 30th when these perks expire.
I agree, the are not going to keep supporting a bunch of dead servers, kinda pay me now or pay me later, will be intrested in seeing what happens with them, maybe after they open up the free play to level 15 will have to see how that plays in as well.
Do not dwell in the past, do not not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.

It all boils down to the one factor in why I would continue to play an MMO over any other game. My attachment to my characters.

Sure, TOR doesn't have a ton of customization options, custom housing, etc... but what it does have let me create my identity. My name was first and foremost, I rushed to get to the server assigned to me so I could forge that identity. I worked hard to unlock my legacy name. It is WHAT I AM in this game. Otherwise I am just some random toon.

Now with the 15>1 server ratio of mergers, I looked at my destination and all my names are taken except one. Legacy is likely gone too.

So to paraphrase the bard, is a toon, by any other name, just as sweet? Not to me.

So what are my choices? Lose everything I built and move? Or die at the eventual forced server merges?

Sure, TOR didn't handle names well, I get that. Not everyone understands the GENIUS that Cryptic came up with for Champions and STO. If our Legacy name was our identity, merges would be easier to handle. Sure, there might be 1000 Shaydes, but only one with my surname is me. This is nothing but woulda-shoulda-coulda.

Should TOR at least give us a destination choice? Absolutely. Let me find a server that I can get a few characters transferred to intact. That will improve things. Or how about giving us a couple more destination servers? There are queues now, why not open a couple more and give us better options?

I just had to get this out. I'm sure there are a lot of you out there that share my viewpoint. I know most of my guild leadership isn't moving for this VERY REASON. No free pet, or speeder, or other nonsense is going to do.

If we leave we lose our identity. That is all we truly have.
Please, get over yourself. If this is the reason you're quitting a game, you have far bigger problems.
