Different types of customization. Appearance tab is greatest visual customization, whereas the orange gear/mod system is greatest stat customization. With some work, the orange gear/mods can become both.

If you don't want to look like everyone else right now, then don't, and be slightly less powerful. Or, quit and come back when new tiers of content are released. In the long run, it's really not worth complaining that you have to spend some time looking the same as everyone else if you want to be ideally geared.
