Are SWTOR players spoiled? (Came from FF XI instead of WOW)

Every generation, OP, has been a bit more spoiled than the one that came before it. This is true in real life, as well as in gaming of all types.

What you are seeing is a rapid escalation of this process because of the incredible advances in tech in the last 20 years, along with other changes in various parts of life.

I feel bad for today's youth ( as in, younger than 20 years old), to be honest. They have grown up with some great things, but they have also grown up with some not-so-great things. Let's take a look at some of them.

About 10 years ago or so, they started handing out trophies to every kid at the end of T-ball...just for showing up. This does not happen everywhere, but it is very, very prevalent. This also happens in other activities that children engage in. This is where reward and entitlement for nothing begin, if no one fixes it.

Also about 10 years ago, public school teachers (in my state, but probably all states) have started to have to hand out grades. Bad grades somehow now = bad teacher, instead of lazy student. Bad grades = lower test scores. Lower test scores = less funding for the school. These teachers are in a bad place, a place they should not be...and if you don't think this is happening, you need to wake up.

What I am getting at, is that these young people are getting robbed. They are getting robbed of what it feels like to actually *earn* something, and to have to actually *earn* things. They are getting robbed of the true feeling of accomplishing something, because for various reasons, it has been handed to them. Unless they play(ed) competitive sports, took part in competitive debate or science club, etc., it is unlikely that they have ever had to actually earn anything in their lives thus far. Good parents do their best to try to teach this value, but it just isn't really being reinforced anywhere else.

It is a shift in attitude and mentality brought on by factors that are mostly out of their control. Some of today's youth are able to overcome this, but most just don't see any reason to. I have managed too many of them in my career to be wrong, though I wish I was.

I really wish I was. This is a shift in society that is being reflected in our online communities.

And yes...if they did not invest a significant amount of time into a game like EQ or FF, they are spoiled in comparison.

The OP is confusing quality with ease. FF XI is notorious as one of the worst (i.e. quality) MMOs.

Heh, I disagree and really like FFXI, but I respect your opinion because it isn't without merit.

If anyone took offense to the title of the post I meant no disrespect, after all I myself am a SWTOR player, and I feel this game is spoiling me sometimes compared to how things were in FFXI, but not everyone in the game is spoiled at all .

I do agree that most leveling content in swtor is too easy, and leveling is too fast. these two really go hand an hand, and it would be great if they toned down the xp gain, but it is obviously to late for that. When playing my alts i actual like doing the heroics solo because its a much more challenging fight.

Played Diablo a bit, having to run back to get your loot was stupid.I played Phantasy Star online a bit for Sega Dreamcast too.....2 hours to go back to get a stupid sword you wanted because you dropped it when you died fighting a boss.Thats a waste of time to me.
Going back to get your body is another Time/$ sink , it's all designed to waste your time and make the game seem like hundreds of hours of playtime but its more or less needless tasks to keep people busy so they can make money if its pay to play,or claim theres a ton of hours of gameplay when its no more than time consumeing penalties that have nothing to do with gameing.
They can take that design and bury it.

I agree that it's too late for them to change the existing content but it's not too late for any new content to be ramped up drastically in difficulty.

CoH did this a few years in by adding new zones of various levels that were essentially group-required and much tougher overall. The old easytown zones were mostly empty of players after that.

I came from Guild Wars, LOTRO and SWG. I have played a few others a little bit. I have never played WoW, and I can say that this game isn't very feature rich is the problem. I'm not talking sandbox vs theme park really, but it just doesn't have the little touches that make a game world feel alive. There aren't any real dwellings to speak of as far as homes go and the ones that do exist are laughable. There may be a desk in the room, but they don't look lived in. There aren't any social things to do either. I think BW just didn't really realize what it took to make a game that people wanted to spend tons of time in. You have to make the world feel lived in and this game certainly doesn't feel that.

I agree with the OP....

That's my two cents.
