It is always best to at least try and cap if the defender is busy. If you see that he is coming back and has enough time to stop you, THEN you can try killing him. Objectives first, kills second.
Er, the described situation doesn't really even tell you if the defender was more than 30m away. There's no chance you'll successfully cap with a defender still within 30m already in combat since you can't stun him for 8s and because he's already fighting someone, you can also rule out stuff like a real well timed flash bang + something else.

Now if it's like 40m away with some LoS obstruction in the way sure go for the cap. It'll also depend on what the enemy class is of course. Anyone with Force Speed can make up a lot of room in a relatively short time, for example.

It's probably a good idea to cap anyway, because either it works or you fight the defender immediately and hopefully bring your 2on1 advantage to good use. The longer you wait, the less advantage you have in either trying to cap or kill him. It's generally easier to just try to kill the defender first unless it's a class that you know will not die easily (Marauder, Tankasin, or healer).

Some guy was yelling "Throw the Ball! Throw the Ball!".... so I had to intervene and say "erm ahem, it's going to be ok, put the shrooms down..we are in Voidstar"

I had a game in Novare Coast where we're up 100 to 10 and just finished 3 capping and a guy raging about how we suck because he thought we were the purple team (or whatever the default team for Empire is against Republics).

Though to be fair it's not often to start on the Republic's base in Novare Coast as Empire.

Navore Coast we are winning 100% to 6%. We never had less than 2 nodes and even 3 capped for a little bit. For whatever reason we lose 2 nodes. Someone in our chat says "Don't worry about it, just defend the one we have." I laugh it off thinking it was a pretty funny joke, but after a couple mins of attacking one of Imp controlled nodes by myself and not seeing anyone else from my team coming to help my laughter turned to disbelief. Sure as ****, my team was sitting on our one node expecting to ride it out for the win. I quickly tell them that we have to have 2 nodes to win the game. Whether the believed my or not it was too late. We ended up losing 0% to 6%.

Needless to say I was like ***????

People who tear down a scorer on the other team after they made a point when they should be chasing the ball again.

When we get in a group and no one says ANYTHING at all. No inc, nada.

There is one guy in particular that whines constantly blaming everyone else. Every WZ i happen to find myself trapped in with him it's the same thing.

People who are busy dueling in HB instead of trying to score..
Mal: That's the buffet table.
Kaylee: Well, how can we be sure, u-unless we question it?

One thing that is the dumbest thing anyone could do , is not control mid in Huttball....

I am guilty of this myself, and it is my biggest pet peave, but it is the hardest thing to discipline someone to do...

Usually the stealth class is hoping you'd die and then the defender might inexplicably leave so he can finish capping.

Unless you're thinking the defender is particularly blind, there's no reason to assume you can ever cap safely against someone who is already in combat.
I most definitely can, because in 3/4th of the cases (against PuG's), the defender will stop to attack me, because he can't SEE the stealther, that's why it is important that the class which comes with you is a stealther, and that he goes right for the point, possibly using his force speed when he sees that the defender is focusing you and when he didn't see him.
You are severely overestimating the average PuGer, and even if he did run back, being an Assault vanguard, I'd have killed him before he got there.

It's another matter when you're facing a premade, but even then, you're better off trying for the point, because they will definitely get reinforcements (not to mention, no premade would leave a point defended solo).

This was the case here, I would even have understood if the stealther helped me out right away (though it is still stupid), but his hesitation, followed by a not knowing what to do, followed by a slow decision to go for the most medals is striking. All in, it all took FAR longer than the 8s required to cap.
