Server Transfer and your name gripe

I'm also someone who has used the same video-game names since back to Baldur's Gate, and have grown quite fond of them.

They could have just used a system whereby if there were 2 Brian's on the same server, they can both be Brian, but if one entered an instance where the other was already in, the new Brian would show as Brian (2) until he left the instance, and be Brian again.....

Or just let us use the same names, we've all got Legacy names and idividual accounts, so the programming won't get mucked up trying to figure out who is who.....

Do you even know if that's possible? Isn't it entirely possible that as it's an, at least semi, automated process that the system will flag up your name as being in use (as it is, by you) and then force you to change the name whereas if you had done bugger all you'd be left with the name you wanted? That is one of the reasons I'm not going to do it for any potential destination servers, or I might do it for one of my characters as I don't particularly like the name and it could make a it a free name change.

Might be nice to get a BW answer on that, as I'm curious now.

this is a horrible comparison it's like comparing apples to oranges. the MMO biz and the restaurant biz are completely different. good job at making a completely irrelevant comparison.

That's not a bad idea IMO. Shut down say one - three servers a month (depending on the populations) & replace those three or so with a new one. I've been saying that since I realised this game had like 20 servers per region (I think that was waaaay overly confident of them to make that many.) that if they kill some & move people, wouldn't that reduce maintenance costs for the company??

Keep in mind that most of these servers see hardly even 200 connections a day, if that. I know on my old server, Peragus Mining Facility, on the Republic side there must have been 40 people on at the euro prime time. That includes the fleet population as well.

But I'm of two minds with the name thing. I know my main I'm so attached to that name it's not funny, but I understand how if two people want the name it probably should go to the one who had it first on that server. It wouldn't really be fair to do otherwise. So long as you have a unique name I think you should be fine though. Say for instance if you named yourself "Wookiebacca" that'd probably be taken, but something like "Zola'jun" probably wouldn't. Hell worst comes to worst why don't you just do what I did there.
If your name was Zola, & that was taken, just make it Zola'jun. You keep the original name sound but add something onto it. But think it over & make sure that what you add really is what you want to & not something stupid.. like Jar Jar. loljks.

I know this is petty, but I still can't help but to feel I was ram rodded here.

I kind of hate the idea of having multiple people of the same name on one server. Heck, if you did come up with a cool, original name, before you know it, there could be 20 new toons with the same name. I'd rather have to think of another name than give people the ability to use my name on the server I play on.

If you don't have unique names, you probably will lose them. You can't name your SW "Reaper" and then expect you'll get to keep it in a transfer.

Indeed. I'd hate for there to be 5 more 'Shagarats' on a server I was on, not because I particularly care about my name, I care about any possible damage to my reputation. If one of those other 'Shagarats' is a complete and utter d-bag, people are going to automatically see one and assume it's the same d-bag.

Yep. Or, you may be a DPS/Healer and get auto invites to groups to tank because they grouped with one of the others that did tank. Things like that would get old fast.

I kind of wish I could change some of my names, TBH. Well, mainly just my Scoundrel, who I named Braze.

It's not, I'd rather play with people again than get my undies in a bunch over my name and I probably will do as you suggested and expect to tell everyone in the future "How to invite me and How to add me a friend" after I figure it all out.
