And have it so the 4 digit number is not visible unless needed for messaging or whatever,
I don't know of anywhere in the world where everyone has a different first name.
Even cleaner than that...they could leverage the legacy system and include your legacy name into your character. There could be 2 James', but you're James Johnson, while the other James is in the Shaw Legacy. It still may require unique names...but you're expanding 1 unique name per account, as opposed to per character.

You come home either on leave or from the deployment and fire up your account. You log onto your character and see he's been flagged for a name change because someone else wanted the name. Can't always assume that an account is inactive and the person is never coming back, never.

Worst case scenario: if you really wanted a name and someone had it, could always put in a ticket to see if they can give you the name if it's on an inactive account or on a character that's say below level 10 and hasn't even picked an AC yet.
I would feel like "Hey, I guess i've been away for a while, and in the clause in the TOS it said after 4 motnhs of inactivity my name would be recycled"

What's in a name? Just yourself, I've always had specific names I've chosen to be known as in games, but as online gaming has exploded I've found that each new game I go to, I have to come up with a new call sign for myself.

At first I was very disheartened by this, but after years and years of this occurring (my first gaming system was an Atari, yeah, Ive been around THAT long), I now use such opportunities to my advantage.

One can get really attached to a name, after all its a NAME! However, the english language is filled with awesome, brilliant, and vibrant words... Use this as an opportunity to find a name that you can grow into... there's plenty of them out there.

There are plenty of ways around it, if you really want to keep your name.
It's still disappointing to those who reserved names in early access who don't like to use those in their names. Just makes it difficult for others to invite you to a group and even look you up.

It's nice there's a sort of option to retain your name but it's just not the same and setting youself up for at least a little headache when your name isn't using normal letters.

My sympathies to the last round of The Fatman transfers.. hope it's not my server.

I suggested, with having legacy names, a middle initial added to the duplicate name (A, and I not withstanding), just like in real life.
May the Schwartz be with you....

But since the Devs decided to give certain servers the right to switch servers before others, which takes away the

I know this is petty, but I still can't help but to feel I was ram rodded here.
then don't transfer and keep your precious names. if i'm not mistaken the transfers at this time are optional.

some guy no Begeren Colony was so upset that he lost his name yesterday, he was going on about how he was going to kick the other guys *** and went on a huge rant. Amusing, because we flamed him relentlessly and now he will never have any new friends.

/facepalm

That makes sense. Screw over they guy who is actually supporting the game and instead support the account that may never come back. So If I make a reservation at a restaurant and don't show up the restaurant should hold my seat just in case I do? You never know right . Sounds like bad business to me. Or they could have put up new server so people could transfer to.

If you're the kind of person who can't be flexible about your name. Maybe being forced to be flexible can be valuable to someone accustomed to a rigid mindset.

If retaining your name is that important to you, you could always create a character on your desired server and then later on, pay to transfer there so you can get your name back.
