This is the same thing I thought they should have done. Although, in the end it still wouldn't be 100% fair. Since the servers that get to transfer first would get all the good names, and by the time the last servers get to transfer, all the names would be taken. Although, the smart people would make a bunch of lvl 1 characters to save names if they name new servers.

It still would be better, as the dead accounts and trial characters wouldn't be taking up names.

EDIT: I have sent a message directly to customer service and will post here their reply, in case other people are wondering this as well.
You'll only know if your name is taken if after transferring your toon name is gibberish, or as others have suggested go to the destination server and make a place holder.
Vehicles in SWTOR are NOT mounts.

Hard to do that without a list of destination servers showing where we could potentially be going.

At least now, if you don't like your name, you can create a lvl 1 with the name you don't want anymore on the new server before you transfer so you can change your main's name.

Or you could make lvl 1 characters of your friends to make them have to change their names...MUAHAHAHA

Also, they say it will be in stages, so, for your server, there might be new servers open... might be better, might be worse.

I still think you should be paying to play with 200+ players on fleet, not 2 on the whole server.

In the end, it is your choice and your money are at stake so... you know better.
Yeah I suppose we'll just have to wait and see how it works out.

There are pros and cons to playing on busy or slow servers. Sometimes I just want to play by myself and on a dead server I don't have other people killing the things I need for my missions or whatnot, and no distracting chat. Then when I want to play with other people I play on a busier server. I know other people too who like playing on lower-population servers more than busier ones. It's all about what you want from the game and going to a server that'll provide it. I like being spread out anyway so then I can do just that, and also when the idiots in the chat on one server get to me, I can go play on my low traffic server and enjoy the peace and quiet.

My main server was on the 2nd wave of transfers today and I lost 2 of 8 names, 1 being my main character.

The alternative? Hanging around on an extremely empty server where most people either don't play anymore or have transferred off until the devs decide to just shut it down and/or force all remaining characters onto another random server.

I wouldn't kid myself, the servers listed as origin servers *are* going to be quite empty, and I feel there should be some sort of a warning for any new players to *not* roll characters there. I don't see a very long life expectancy for servers they are letting you transfer away from.

Given that server transfers are being made almost mandatory owing to a problem created by BioWare (because of server over-capping and the extent to which they widely distributed guilds at launch), and given that their solution entails only a single option for destination servers, anybody with half a brain would agree that the player who has 43 days put into a character and claimed his character name minutes after the server went online at early access has the right to that character name over the other guy. If you don't agree, then I guess we can deduce what that says about you.

This may have been discussed in other threads, but it's still the first thread that comes up when you do a Google search, and though it may be a dead horse, BioWare need to understand how much they're cheesing off loyal customers.

If I were you, I would put less energy into being snarky and dismissive of things other players care about and more energy into just playing the game and minding your own business.

Sigh...
Or it could be an active player that made that character last week and is playing in a set group. You have zero idea. Changing his name might cheese off 4 loyal customers. I have seen this discussion on multiple games and it always involves people guessing that the person that has the name they want is inactive. You have no idea.

I wanted the name "wargen Freeman" on wow, but they never freed it up for me..those *#$%&&.

and just like the real world, people pay for this game.

AND IN AMERICA, WHEN YOU PAY FOR A SERVICE, YOU EXPECT TO GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

if this game was FTP, that's a different story.

i've been playing since EARLY beta, if i lose my character's names, i will quit, and there is nothing they can dangle in front of me to get me to return.

people seem to give game developers a free pass...an undeserved one. they get paid to do a job, just like most people that play...

what happens when you miss deadlines, underachieve, lose 400k clients?? well, i'd assume you'd get fired...

and i doubt anyone would be running to your defense.
