I posted this in the suggestion forum, but I'll link it here, as this seems to be the most active thread on the subject.

What happens when Joe decides to come back to the game in a months time and finds someone else called Joe has decided to join his server and take his name?
Happened to me with Lord of the Rings Online. Came back after a few years and found they had merged a bunch of stuff into my server. When I tried to log into a character, it said I had to pick a new name. I hadn't played for 2 years, so I was hardly upset about it.

Blizzard actually takes names one step further. If a name is taken, but the character has been inactive long enough (particularly if they don't even show up on the Armory site), just submit a ticket, and a GM will usually make the name available.

As for Star Wars, I think they need to give character and legacy name priorities to the highest legacy level.

Renaming issues solved. You're welcome.
There must be more to it than just hitting alt and typing a number.
I certainly can't get it to give me any of these in my tests I have just tried.

Not that I think that I should be able to 'steal' anyone's character or legacy name.
I hope to stay on the server where I have most recently been playing, and if anything, bring other characters there just to loot them.
I was just wondering about trying to use this method to get a variation of a legacy name that I really want and couldn't get it to work when I was experimenting with character names.
Free stuff (for you and me)! My referral link.

Why.? Just because you have a higher legacy then me means your more entitled to a name than me even if I have active subs and played from day one.

Use the keypad on the right, not the number row at the top. Also, don't include the "0" of those numbers. I don't know why he did.

finally, not all of the examples he gives work with the game (They'll just show a little box instead).

Just because you were lucky enough to be one a destination server means you are more entitled than me even if I have active subs and have played from day one?

Thing is, someone is going be unhappy with name collisions. It's either, get lucky and have your server a destination server, or Bioware can make it based on something more fair. The legacy levels provide a pretty good metric for things like this. If my legacy level is higher than yours, I think I should have somewhat more of an entitlement.

Thanks for that.

I had just figured it out and was coming here to edit my post... Now to see if it works on legacy names.
If it does, I am one happy camper.

Yes you are moving to my server so therefore you should change your name, IF it was the other way round it wouldn't not bother me at all.
so I don't understand why people insist they are more entitled to a name just because they have a higher legacy.

In other MMO's I have played if your name is taken tough then find a new one and this goes for transfering servers too.

And this is why they should do this.....

Just keep in mind that using special characters in your name can have some side effects that you may not like. Stuff like, it's harder to send you a whisper unless they've memorized the list of alt characters.

You make some very good points. I don't like the idea of server lottery, although, I don't really like the idea of how MMO's deal with names either. I personally know several Dave's, would be nice if your name was your first and last, or something like that.
