This is all assuming that the transfers haven't been completed by the time they roll out free trial.

I agree 100% with Kraith. If requiring you to change your toon's name screws with your feeling of identity then you might need therapy. It's just a name. You're still the one playing the toon regardless of the name.

Why the misleading, and honestly, demeaning suggestion that anyone who would like to keep the same identity over the last six months of playtime, is assumed to be the one who is too attached? It could just as easily be said for the number of posters in this thread, who apparently have let their sub lapse at some point or another, because wookies weren't playable species yet, and are vehemently against active accounts receiving priority.

It is also highly facetious to suggest that someone should stay on their older server. We all know that the current level of servers are unsustainable, and that Bioware will essentially be separating the 'living' from the 'dead' servers.

Everyone, whether they won the server lottery or not, should be treated equally. If people weren't equally attached to their names, we wouldn't be having this debate, either for or against it. All I want is to devise a system more nuanced than who was lucky enough to choose the server on opening day that Bioware was going to eventually spare.

No, there are already free trials. There have been like half a dozen free weekends. There is also the trial that active subscribers can give their friends where they can play for a week.

These transfers aren't really of free will. They are basically marking certain servers as dead and if you are on there then you need to transfer or play alone until they force you to transfer because the server is shutting down. These are server merges with a different name.
The differece is that what you are saying is rich people = privilige. If you can afford to pay every month you should get what you what. While people who cant pay every month should risk losing their rights.

So, basicly what you and many others mean is that people who cant or wont pay every month should be punished for it by risking to lose their character identity because some people who can, happened to pick a server that ended up dead, and forced them to move.

So lets say it is like that. You are on a dead server, move to some other server and you get the name you want because the other guys account was unsubbed. Then you are in an accident that puts you in the hospital for 3 months and while there your account is unsubbed. When you return you see someone else took your name.

Now, will you be angry about it and think you should have your name because you have been a subscriber since the start, or do you think its ok and get a new name?

See, the moral is.
If you think its unfair to you. Then you should see its just as unfair to the guy/girl you took the name from.
If you think its ok, then why did you have to get the name from the other guy/girl in the first place?

What i wrote is my opinion, Its not writen in law, its not writen in stone but its still a fact, there is no reason good enough why someone should take a nother players identity.

I'm pretty sure they said they were giving people the option to transfer. If you can't deal with a name change just stay on your server. Sure, you'll be one of just a couple people - but you'll get to keep your name. It's a choice they're giving you at this point so just decide what's more important to you - your name or playing with other people.

Simple solution. Make a character with your special unique name on every server possible and when the time comes to transfer, delete said toon and move your special unique one.

What happens when Joe decides to come back to the game in a months time and finds someone else called Joe has decided to join his server and take his name?
Joe shouldn't have unsubbed. Paying customers have priority, imo.

Priority should be:
1) Active sub
2) Character creation date

If I had a name since launch, and I lose it to a guy that just made the toon yesterday but it's "his" server....that ain't cool. Would I cry and quit? Nope. Would I do some forum PVP? Yep.
