It actually does, since Bioware is a business (subsidiarity of EA) not only does it matter but to EA's board and shareholders its the only thing that matters... Profit, Profit, Profit... that's what determines a high budget game's success, period...

SW:TOR cost EA 0$ to make. It was made by Bioware. It likely cost them a lot of money. EA bought bioware and got SW:TOR as part of the price.

Every dollar SW:TOR brings in is profit for EA.
SWTOR would had a value associated with the sale to EA, hence it would have effected the price of the sale. EA paid for SWTOR, it definitely cost them money to make.
How do you measure the success of an MMO?

I agree with you. Those numbers would have been much worse if Bioware didn't include all of the folks playing the free 30 days. I see a trend here...each financial quarter they will give out free time to spike up the numbers. I would have never dreamed that SWTOR would have been such a disappointment. In fact, I would have bet any amount of money that it would have been the best ever...it's a shame really.

Baldur's Gate, Jade Empire, still look back with fondness in regards to those games... now Bioware's Legacy/Brand is tarnished in my opinion...
^^
The pressure of joining the EA group. Sacrificing quality for faster release dates and $$$. Started from Dragon Age 2; a game released somewhat like a DLC or expansion but announced as a full game. When I was in SWTOR beta back in July 2011 ... I was already somewhat disappointed. I thought sticking through it ... and it might improve.

Sadly 1.2 came a little too late and there were just too many disappointments going up to 1.2. Promised words but failed to deliver. I still have around 2 months subs left, but I have completely lost interest in logging in.

dont bother with using accounting or financial logic on gaming boards ive tried it many times and its largely ignored and people dont believe your comments. though the day the game went down for half a day it was funny to hear a people arguing over a quarter.

I'm talking about the way business works when considering costs and revenues. Sunk costs are gone. You cannot get them back. So for all intents & purposes, they're irrelevant to current decisions. Development costs are measured against potential earnings when the decision is made to sink money into a project, but aren't considered once the project is running and earning returns. What matters is that it makes more money than it costs to run. Until you see EA doing things to reduce their operating costs (like shutting down servers or slowing down content development), SWtOR is in no danger of being cancelled or called back. It will never, ever, EVER have a THING to do with how much it cost to develop.

Please let this be the last time I have to explain this.

LOL, umm wow... really... you think the price of this MMO is irrelevant... please follow me here...

I want SWTOR to succeed, I want it to not only make a ton of money but break records in subs, why?

Because if SWTOR fails not only will we lose another game with the great Star Wars IP, but this will make the market be very frugal on investing large amounts of money into block buster MMO's... The Industry will see that spending $200mil on MMO is extremely risky... Just like everey other business in the entertainment sector....

Its very relevant, SWTOR losing subs makes other companies shy away from making new MMOs...

I would like to think that other mmo's would not be happy with 1.7m subs down to 1.3m after having spent 200 million before launch.
