Really? So your pessimism has led you to the conclusion that it was an act of desperation rather than an act of appreciation, huh? Despite all the evidence to the contrary?

Did you even read the full report? "Subs are right on target". "TOR is very profitable". Read it all, then come back.

compared to other mmos they didnt loose that much. when you look at companies FS and see the company is doing bad this Q you cant just say o its because they made big mistakes. You have to look at other companies in the industry and come to the realization thats the norm and in comparison they are doing well. but in this case we dont know how the market will play out since they are at the point where you cant determine how well the game is doing since the data could go either way.

In the end, not worth it, as the ending completely butchered the game, in fact, butchered the entire series.

It was the last Bioware game I had any expectations for.

Frankly, I was so disappointed with that game that it was one of the underlying causes that made me stop playing this game.
Well, emotions can drive people to do crazy things. I know, for the most part, BioWare is BioWare, but you really are talking about two different teams in two different countries, here, developing two different games in two different genres.

I have a few friends who hold similar intentions. If the shareholder reports are any indication, though, they're well aware of that already. Probably why they're hyping the future expanded content so much and their "big plans to expand the subscriber base". Unless the CEO was dressed as Grand Moff Tarkin and referring to his plans to construct a death star to blackmail people into playing SWtOR (which would explain that funny increase in R&D expenditures under operating costs, IIRC), I think it's safe to assume they're putting their resources into content development.

And as I said before, numbers are funny little things. They may not accurately convey information about the people behind those numbers. It's just about impossible for anyone, even EA, to get a detailed account of just what's going on in the mind of every subscriber. The best they can do is surveys, comments on the forums, server activity, etc. Though I'm willing to bet some people might resub after summer comes around. I know that my own playing has dropped off quite a bit recently due to a heavy schedule, though it's due to pick up soon.

There was another thing I noticed. EA plans to apparently expand its 'head count', and this is in the face of a 'restructuring' to shift the employee balance so that there are more software engineers compared to other employees (it was in an interview on Joystiq, IIRC, though I'm a bit too lazy to go and grab it now. I'll get it later, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). This could indicate that they're trying to take on more coders who can get the code behind content updates done more quickly, though this may just be wishful thinking on my part. In reality, I can't make much of a definitive conclusion from the data, as this involves a company-wide employee structure and SWtOR is one among many arms of EA.

Pointless inserting fact into conversation where it will be ignored, but ...

SW:TOR cost EA 0$ to make. It was made by Bioware. It likely cost them a lot of money. EA bought bioware and got SW:TOR as part of the price.

Every dollar SW:TOR brings in is profit for EA.

there are 4 Qs in a year for those who didnt know. 1st Q, which this press release was from, ends in MARCH this before legacy and the 30 day free trial from the legacy patch lvl 50 gift. also this is before the game went to the 38 countries. so expect a ncrease in subs in Q2 which ends next month though that data wont be released till late july- early august. also as many people have said you have to compare it to other mmos which shows swtor is doing realy well but again the MMO market is very tricky since games like FFXI is still P2P and has a loyal community and it has serously droped in subscribers, though its one of the older mmo's in todays markets, and yet 17+ MMO have gone F2P from massive drops in there community .
The game just started until maby next year when the game community stabilizes and a trend emerges will we know if swtor is doing well or not. SO UNTIL THEN STOP SAYING ITS DOING HORRIBLE OR WONDERFUL
Read my sig. You'll find out that the 1.3 Million subs are from the end of April, so this was after the free 30 days was given, after the expansion into territories, and after the 1.2 patch.
How do you measure the success of an MMO?

If you want to call it pessimism fine, but I can understand that they wanted to give all the players who have quit a chance to find a reason to come back. I saw it as a 'please come back' and you saw it as 'thank you for playing'.

I wouldn't call cancelling a subscription on a sinking MMO to be a "crazy thing"

A 4 billion dollar company has a lot of over-head.
