Heck,
Free Worlds has more players.
I can think of lots of MMOs with more players.
This game is currently number 3 for world wide. http://users.telenet.be/mmodata/Charts/Subs-1.png

For NA+Europe though, it's number 2.

If you try to make more sense out of it then that, you are just going to get a headache. Head over to http://mmodata.blogspot.com/ and spend some time looking at the charts over there. You will notice that over time MMOs subscriber numbers go up down up down. Probably the most consistent one is actually EVE Online. My point being is they fluctuate over time. Sometimes something an MMO producer does causes a big move (like an expansion), sometimes other factors in the market cause moves. They just are not predictable, particlarly for MMOs which have a lot of inactive accounts baked in that can reactivate over a short period of time.
So basically what you're saying is that they are infact just going with the most recent snapshot they have and claiming that to be the current number regardless of how old that information is because it's easier to do so?

1.3 million subs, down from 1.7 million 2 months earlier, and 2 million copies sold 2 months before that. Yay for mediocrity?

Thats some (to quote Bush) damn fuzzy math there...
Nothing fuzzy about it. The active subscribers numbers is just that - the number of people who created an account and purchased one of the subscription options. Not all copies of the game that sold equated to a purchased subscription. The 30 days of trial do not count as an active paid subscription, so the fact that there are less subscribers than copies sold is quite normal - in fact there was no way 2.4 million people were playing the game on launch day or that week. At best only 2 million of those sold copies turned into game play time that first week of launch.

Here what they did was put in the free month sub so they could cover the first quarterly report and make the numbers look better than they actually are. If they went with actual active players that actually log into the game and play, you would see that that number is far lower than 1.3 mil.

Smoke and Mirrors, limit the damage of a failed strategy of copying WoW when they should have built a game that challenged their player-base while offering next generation game play.

the 2nd and 3rd quarter results will be quite telling if they don't find a way to smoke and mirror their way out again tbh.
It's not smoke and mirrors at all. The number of concurrent players in the game is meaningless to the bottom line. The fact of the matter is that 1.3 million paid subscriptions is the money that is in the bank - whether those subscriptions are regular active accounts are immaterial - they already have that money.

No I would not - it was only because it was Star Wars that I had an interest in the game and began to follow it's development. I really had no interest in adding another MMO to my plate (I was currently playing three others at the time). After the game was released, I felt compelled to give it a try and bought a six month sub the following day. I plan on staying for as long as there is a server up and running - because it is Star Wars and I enjoy the game play.

Not really, especially when you are talking about the huge number of copies this game initially sold. I have a ton of games I have bought throughout the years on release day and still have yet to crack the plasticwrap on, let alone install them. I keep telling myself "one day, when I can retire ..."

That doesn't seem all that unusual at all. As I mentioned above, there is no way all 2.4 mill translated into play time the first week. At most, out those 2.4 I would wager that only 2.0 mill have actually been translated into an account and play time - and many of those for only the 30 day trial period.

the title of this thread is kinda flawed in a way because if they had 2.4mil copies sold and 1.3 mil active subs then they
lost 1.1 million subs math doesnt lie there then in all actuality they lost almost 49% of their initial player subs its simple math it doesnt lie and any company that loses 49% of their customers in 5 months time would be crapping their pants and scrambling to do EVERYTHING they can to get people back and keep current people happy its the way buisness works.

Without server transfers
Without an endgame, only one raid (Tor launched with 2)
With only one storyline for all classes
With 6 hour queues
...
Need I go on? Yes, I think I will:

The first major patch in RIFT had only one raid that became available April 16th, 47 days after launch. It had a plethora of attempted class balance nerfs that broke more than it balanced, and was only about half the size of TOR's first major patch. 47 days after launch to get 2 raids, the number of raids TOR launched with. And they were easy, cleared by guilds in no time.

In contrast, TOR's first major patch was January 17th, 28 days after launch, almost half the time of RIFT, and included a new Flashpoint, doubled the size of an Op (effectively a new raid zone), and fixed more bugs right the first time than Rift ever wish they did.

The next major patch in RIFT brought the LFG tool and wardrobe slots on May 10th. It offered NO NEW CONTENT. The next patch to offer new content wasn't until Hammerknell on July 27th, 149 days after launch.

In contrast, TOR's next major patch brought another Warzone, another Operation, Legacy, new dailies and gear on Corellia, balance passes that fixed more than it broke on April 12th, 114 days after launch. TOR had more endgame content faster than RIFT did.

So far, TOR's doing better.

They didn't lost 400,000 in 2 months. Read the report linked on the first page.

I really don't see it being too much longer before we see WoW with half the subs it has today. That game was a phenomenon that will likely never happen again.
They lost 1.7 million from the peak of 12 million in WOTLK. Down to 10.3 million according to the last quarter subs they revealed. But you make some good points. The competition now is getting more aggressive in the MMO market than ever before. It will be hard for them to maintain that sub level. Even the release of D3 may affect them some.

If they had 1.3 million paying subscribers Jan-May, that's $75 million (ish).
They sold 1.7 million boxes, I think $45 to BW for each box is conservative, that's another $75 million.

So if you believe BW and EA when they say the game cost way less than the $300 million some claim, and go with the figure of $150 million that is the plausibly accepted number, then this game is will probably break even in May sometime. Which means it won't fail, because if you make money, you didn't fail.

1) World of Warcraft
The best MMORPG yet because WoW mixes the right amount of depth and simplicity better than any other game in the history of the genre.

2) Rift
Rift has to be considered as one of the most polished MMO games since WoW. The rifts in the game are the best example of public questing so far. In fact, Rift is one of the best games to avoid grinding because there is so much for players to do.

3) Eve Online
The best sci-fi MMORPG with player-run corporations and a thriving economy.

4) Darkfall
Innovative MMO game that focuses on giving players as much freedom as possible.

5) Aion
Aion sports many of the features that made WoW a success but still retains its own personality with characters being able to fly and its PvPvE system.

6) City of Heroes/City of Villains - Game Lair
Combined, City of Heroes and City of Villains are easily the second best MMORPG for casual gamers. With the addition of the well-balanced villain types and the use of bases, City of Villains completes the potential that fans have been craving for ever since City of Heroes launched. To top it off, hardcore gamers now also have a reason to like CoH/CoV with its ultra-quick PvP.

7) Champions Online
Although Champions Online does not appear to be quite the blockbuster to send the Superhero genre to the next level, the game sports one of the best character customization tools yet. Champions Online will be going free-to-play on January 25th.

8) Dark Age of Camelot
Has usually been one the best major MMORPG for PvP combat due to its 3 realm system. Also, DAOC has remained one of the steadiest MMORPGs over the years in terms of quality. However, the game is starting to show its age and other MMOs have incorporated similar or better PvP systems.

9) DC Universe Online
Quite a simply a dream come true for comic book and super hero fans. DC Universe Online boasts quite a PvE/PvP package for a super hero-themed game.

10) Age of Conan
Mature-themed MMO with brutal combat and large-scale warfare. Also has a single-player mode in the first phase of game where each player can wreak havoc at night alone. Has lost a lot of the steam that it once had due to primarily to changes in PVP and lack of solid PvE after level 20. However, Age of Conan has recovered after a somewhat rocky start with several major improvements.
