Even if they do the research and see that subs are down by 400K, do you really think that would be a huge deterrent? I mean, we're still kicking with more than 1million subscribers which is pretty darn impressive.
Remember, prospective players have no idea what this game offers, and there is likely a great deal of players that may relate lost subs in SWTOR in all the gloom and doom the media outlets are portraying it as, as a game that is going down the same path of Aion and Warhammer.

Second, suppose they come to these forums....., do you really think they are going to get much positive feedback when the entire two pages are "I hate this game"

Top 10 Pay-To-Play MMORPGs

1) World of Warcraft
The best MMORPG yet because WoW mixes the right amount of depth and simplicity better than any other game in the history of the genre.

2) Rift
Rift has to be considered as one of the most polished MMO games since WoW. The rifts in the game are the best example of public questing so far. In fact, Rift is one of the best games to avoid grinding because there is so much for players to do.

3) Eve Online
The best sci-fi MMORPG with player-run corporations and a thriving economy.

4) Darkfall
Innovative MMO game that focuses on giving players as much freedom as possible.

5) Aion
Aion sports many of the features that made WoW a success but still retains its own personality with characters being able to fly and its PvPvE system.

6) City of Heroes/City of Villains - Game Lair
Combined, City of Heroes and City of Villains are easily the second best MMORPG for casual gamers. With the addition of the well-balanced villain types and the use of bases, City of Villains completes the potential that fans have been craving for ever since City of Heroes launched. To top it off, hardcore gamers now also have a reason to like CoH/CoV with its ultra-quick PvP.

7) Champions Online
Although Champions Online does not appear to be quite the blockbuster to send the Superhero genre to the next level, the game sports one of the best character customization tools yet. Champions Online will be going free-to-play on January 25th.

8) Dark Age of Camelot
Has usually been one the best major MMORPG for PvP combat due to its 3 realm system. Also, DAOC has remained one of the steadiest MMORPGs over the years in terms of quality. However, the game is starting to show its age and other MMOs have incorporated similar or better PvP systems.

9) DC Universe Online
Quite a simply a dream come true for comic book and super hero fans. DC Universe Online boasts quite a PvE/PvP package for a super hero-themed game.

10) Age of Conan
Mature-themed MMO with brutal combat and large-scale warfare. Also has a single-player mode in the first phase of game where each player can wreak havoc at night alone. Has lost a lot of the steam that it once had due to primarily to changes in PVP and lack of solid PvE after level 20. However, Age of Conan has recovered after a somewhat rocky start with several major improvements.

I'm pretty sure that is why they make trials...

And i highly doubt people are going to come to the forums before purchasing a game

Post WoW MMO's became mainstream, now people anticipate MMO's, they sell a ton of copies at launch, and their population falls off, rather than steadily growing.
Considering that WoW lost 2 million subs in one year and seems to be just barely holding onto 10 million I think that after their next expansion drops their subs will go up and then they'll drop even more. I think what can be learned from seeing MMOs post-WoW is that the market is becoming bigger, people have more choices, and because of that even the king of the hill is going to feel that pain. I really don't see it being too much longer before we see WoW with half the subs it has today. That game was a phenomenon that will likely never happen again.

Why do you say its the second largest. Thats completely false.
Aion has more players.
Heck,
Free Worlds has more players.
I can think of lots of MMOs with more players.

Well, sure, I don't doubt that some people would take all the "doom and gloom" and decide not to purchase the game, but I can't see the majority of prospective players doing that.

And, oof, I feel sorry for the poor chap who unwittingly wanders into these forums. You're quite right about that. Almost everyone has something negative to say and that would drive off prospective players. I won't dispute that.

See, the thing is the numbers are always changing, and anything they give you is a "snapshot" and they know it, so they have to tell you the snapshot date.

If you try to make more sense out of it then that, you are just going to get a headache. Head over to http://mmodata.blogspot.com/ and spend some time looking at the charts over there. You will notice that over time MMOs subscriber numbers go up down up down. Probably the most consistent one is actually EVE Online. My point being is they fluctuate over time. Sometimes something an MMO producer does causes a big move (like an expansion), sometimes other factors in the market cause moves. They just are not predictable, particlarly for MMOs which have a lot of inactive accounts baked in that can reactivate over a short period of time.

Sounds fishy to me also. Maybe he was just making a statement like ." as we know from our lastest figures, we are down to 1.3 million subs as of today." Which was really off of figures for the last of the quarter which ended March 31? Lol..who knows.
