The figure becomes more grim when you consider it includes a chunk of people gifted free months...

Through the end of the quarter, approximately 2.4 million units have sold through. In our last call we indicated that we had 1.7 million active subscribers, and as of the end of April we now have 1.3 million, with a substantial portion of the decrease due to casual and trial players cycling out of the subscriber base, driving up the overall percentage of paying subscribers.

Interesting question. I do not know the answer and am puzzled by it as well. For instance, I don't consider myself hardcore by any stretch. I play about 2-3 hours each night and usually all day on Saturday. That doesn't seem like a lot to me, however most people seem to consider that hardcore. *shrugs*

It's EA. They are pretty good about their demographic metrics and numbers. Sounds like a good question for them.

Nice Forum name by the way.

What they were talking about is people who installed the game, but never resubbed after 30 days free play was done + trial accounts that did not convert.

Maybe next time you shouldn't be so factually and blatently wrong about your assumptions and statements. Then you wouldn't have to concern yourself so much with saving face, and instead, could actually add something constructive and interesting to the conversation.

man as someone said earlier, I'd pay 15$ for a years sub to these forums.

wouldn't pay it for the game, but 15 is 15 right?

All in all, as many others have said here 1.3 million subscribers is very good at this point in the game. And we can clearly expect more and better content in the next year, which will draw some of those players back and bring in more players. Plus we still have to see how many subs were added thanks to the recent new roll-out in the Eurasia. I believe the game only needs to carry 500K subs to break even, so we are in very good shape here - lots of SW goodness for quite a while.

BJ
If 500,000 is the break even point, chance are the quality and quantity of added content will drop if the subscriber count is at that point. You should be on the side of the people leaving the game because of various things like PvP, PvE, and the server populations being so low in encouraging Bioware to actually do something about it, instead of saying "let the whiners leave, we can do with 500,000 people".

You should be worried about a large drop off.

I agree with you on that point.

My comments were geared towards trying to make sense of 2.4M units sold somehow connecting to 1.3M active subscribers.

Given Star Wars' position in the pop culture, worldwide,I don't know that at this time there's anything positive or negative to be made of it. If the base for this game is 1.3M active subscribers (and hopefully for EA, growing), and that meets EA's idea of profitability for active subscribers, then the other 1.4M people is all langniappe for them -- pure profit that they're just out the physical costs of the box and DVDs, for which they will never have to expend any resources on. Sure, we could look at it as lost capacity, and EA's marketing/development department probably does look at things that way. But, Star Wars fans are a strange and fickle lot -- I don't know of any objective measures to verify how many of those other 1.4M people could be counted on to ever have played the game.

Let me test you.

Tell me three things BioWare could do with the game that would keep you as a paying subscriber for another 12 months? I highly doubt you can come up with something here that isn't completely outlandish, but good luck.

Maybe you'll prove me wrong?
I can name just 1 thing that would keep me a paying subscriber

Merge the frakin servers, get rid of half if not more of them. That is not outlandish at all.

It's an earnings call. They're always fluff. They're some of the most mind-numbingly ridiculously boring and useless calls in modern business, if you ask me.

I have a 6 month sub, and no longer play this game for how dead it is. And I think there are people like me who believe in this game and paid for the time they think they would be still playing. Hence, high subscription number but dead servers
I'm one as well, paid for 6 months, my time ends July 21st, quit playing at the beginning of april.
