by looking at the playing times of each person that left? Perhaps looking at the data of what kind of activities that did and how much time they spent on it?
How do you measure the success of an MMO?

I'm wondering that myself, but that's what they're reporting themselves.

It's a fallacy to a degree to connect units sold with subscribers. For those wondering about the strength of the game, we all just really care about subscribers, and the magic number is whether 1.3M subscribers is any good. The game launched as the fastest growing MMORPG of all-time and it's settled in as the #2 MMORPG in America. It probably is.

Regarding the units sold, it may be a hard fact to wrap one's head around for some people, but there's any number of reasons why a game may be purchased, but not "activated" at the same time. Gifts are probably a big cause of this, in some cases purchased the past several months for Christmas some 9 to 11 months later. The others that were investigated at game launch were the extreme fans buying the CE version for the other swag, and even just for that Gnost-dural book. This group's interesting. When it comes to Star Wars, there's people who will actually just buy the game because it has Star Wars on it, but may not actually ever play the game, or even open the package up. All of this grossly skews the numbers compared to less "fandom" oriented products.

I'm just telling you what's being reported.

If EA/BioWare considers them casuals, it's the casuals who left. Don't let it bruise your ego too hard.

ie: their term "casual" =/= the MMO players term for "casual".

Its great if that really is where the numbers are from, but where exactly does it say that? the report is for the ending of Q4 and fiscal year 12 and that is march 31st.

Edit: nm i found it.

I'd say TOR is doing great. Still way above the typical MMO dropoff curve.

What's important now is what BioWare does from now on. That's where we'll see if this game will break the mold or not. Transfer/shut-downs and endgame content needs to come soon if they're to have any real shot at the atypical increase in subs.
Doing great? Dropping steadily in numbers is usually not attributed to success. Also, RIFT has been out for 14 months. From March 2011-August 2011 it had dropped 50% to 1 million subs, and now is estimated around 350k. By comparison, SWTOR is on the same track.

If it's not counting free month people it's a lot more solid than if it is (if it is, then it could well be below 1m actual paying subs).
Please, people, think. How could a number from the end of March represent players who didn't get a free month added to their accounts until April 25th, 2012?

Come on.

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic was the most successful subscription MMO launch in history
and is now firmly established as the #2 MMO in the west. The service is extremely strong
    on the operations level.
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic now has 1.3 million subscribers, with a much higher mix of
ongoing credit card consumers, but on a lower absolute number of subs. The service is
stable, profitable and we have strong plans to grow it in fiscal 13.
  • Full game downloads were up 76% year-over-year. Origin contributed $48 million of non-
GAAP revenue, fueled by Mass Effect 3, Star Wars: The Old Republic and revenue
generated from our third-party publishing relationships.
  • The 143% growth in subscriptions, advertising and other revenue was driven by the
December launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic.

And for the official update on Star Wars:
  • "Let me provide you with an update on Star Wars:
Through the end of the quarter, approximately 2.4 million units have sold through. In our last
call we indicated that we had 1.7 million active subscribers, and as of the end of April we now
have 1.3 million, with a substantial portion of the decrease due to casual and trial players
cycling out of the subscriber base, driving up the overall percentage of paying subscribers.
We have already launched a number of initiatives designed to grow subscriptions. The initial
responses have been positive and we are encouraged by the gaming community’s reaction.
In summary, we delivered an extraordinary launch of a solidly profitable long-term franchise,
which contributed to both our gross and operating margin improvements in fiscal 12. We expect
this title will further expand our margins in fiscal 13 as we get the full year benefit of subscription
    revenue.
Let us give you two additional points of perspective as it relates to our current subscriber base
and its impact on our fiscal 13 guidance. First, the current number of active subscribers, 1.3
million, is very consistent with the original assumptions we made when we acquired BioWare in
2008. Second, while this franchise is very profitable, it only represents a mid-single digit
percent of our total profitability in fiscal 13.
1.3 millions subs, interesting .

Now I would be interested in knowing how many of these are among the free months or welcome back week.
For now the game feels more like having around 500k active subs than else. Not bad for a fair MMO but not that good for a SW one with a budget over 3 times games like Rift/AoC/Lotro....

Servers are dead and the forums are even worse.

Before leaving one thing is really wrong in EA statement: casual players cycling out. Echo base we have an issue, the casual players should be the ones sustaining the game not the hardcore ones that are burning content too fast., especially so soon after launch with no end content.

Really? That's a blatant lie, 1.2 was really a mess, far from being a hit.

Anyway future will tell, at least it seems the suits are starting to listen the players feedback.
