These numbers would be fantastic for a no name studio with a shoestring budget.

This is BIOWARE though, a studio that was renowned when they were independent, and is now a household name (as far as game developers go) and arm of one of the biggest game publishers in the business, and they had a huge budget.

They sqauandered it to make WoW with lightsabers and mass effect dialogue wheels with voice acting that people spacebar through after their first character..
Not true. From the report on page 7:

Quote:
Let us give you two additional points of perspective as it relates to our current subscriber base
and its impact on our fiscal 13 guidance. First, the current number of active subscribers, 1.3
million, is very consistent with the original assumptions we made when we acquired BioWare in
2008. Second, while this franchise is very profitable, it only represents a mid-single digit
percent of our total profitability in fiscal 13.
They just said here that 1.3 million is on target. They also just said that TOR, overall, is only a mid-single digit percent of EA's total profitability, but that it IS "very profitable" currently.

Which means that TOR had very little to do with EA's stock drop, that it's on target, and that TOR is "very profitable".

Need I really say more?

Think of it this way. almost 50% of the people who were excited enough to pay $60-$150 for this game are not willing to continue to pay for it.
And they still have a 2.2 million player base. That will never change. How many people have purchased WoW over the years and kept going back to that drivel. Thankfully Ghostcrawler broke me out of Skinners Box and told me what I was worth.

Sub =/= copies sold and it never will be.. Rift sold / gave away over 1 million copies. Last year at GenCon they gave away copies of Rift in the Gift Bag.. I know two of my co-workers currently use the game for coasters. Even with me giving them both two invites to play the game for free.

The posted news firmly puts a cabosh on a lot of the na-sayers rhetoric. The game has issues yes, but it is far from dead.

Feel free to test that number against your server during peak hours, should be pretty darn close.
Don't know what servers you play on, but on The Harbinger, at peak hours, there will be more than 400 people on just the Republic and Imperial Fleets combined. The averages across all servers are one thing, but some of those servers are dead and some have plenty of people on them. They made too many servers because of all the que times at launch and really need to consolidate a few of them.

I remember when it was "no grace period!" at launch, and "server queues, how dare they!!", etc. etc. yada, yada. As they always say, haters gonna hate.

Setting aside all the hyperbole (on either side of the discussion), The published data points in the earnings call are SOX compliant (or they go to prison for fraud), so they can be taken as fact (whether you like it or not, on either side of the discussion).

Now, MMOData.net (who correlates EA data to Xfire, and uses his long years of experience to gleen believable data projects) already nailed the retention track numbers in their last prediction (March 8, 2012) when he plotted SWTOR at ~ 1.4 million (as of first half of March), having peaked from early enthusiasm peak of 1.7 million. MOData also commented that he considers the game stabilized now having passed its launch frenzy peak (you can read his special comments on SWTOR here: http://users.telenet.be/mmodata/Charts/Subs-1.png.

All that said, this game is alive and well. It's one of only a handful of MMOs to occupy the 1M+ subs for MMOs [ http://users.telenet.be/mmodata/Charts/Subs-1.png ] It needs to pare down the number of launch servers (which is a pretty normal even for new MMOs that launch with pent up demand). And if ever there was an MMO with pent up demand, this would be the mother of them all. The developers have said since day one it is profitable at 500k subs. They have nearly three times that right now, and the game is still very young. Subs may go up, or they may go down over tie, but they are still very healthy, so the game is not dying, just some serves (mostly PvP) are dying. That will be fixe here in 6-8 weeks when they launch automated server transfer mechanics.

While it does not matter who is leaving or why, it's fun to talk about. So, we know from all the venom on the forum that hardcore anyone has pretty much left the game or will shortly. Good riddance, because this is not a hardcore centered game, it's a game for a wide variety of "non-extreme" tastes. As a person who used to hardcore PvP and hardcore PvE in earlier years, I find the content, approach, and pace/challenge of SWTOR to be refreshing, as I am sure many other do. Some will not and will leave in a huff and a growl, which is fine by me.

Only EA will every know the actual numbers. Everyone here, regardless of your view of the game and subscription discussions are playing the old blindfold game of pin the tail on the donkey. It's pointless, and it's divisive discussion, but I certainly do not expect it to go away until most of the malcontents walk the talk and actually leave.
Sorry..I had to put your post into a quote before I could read it....my sunglasses are down in the garage I think. Anyway, did'nt the report from EA say something about TOR not being able to keep the casual gamers as much as they felt it would? Something along those lines.

It's a shame. They could have cut that number in half if they would have kept the game changes to a mininum with 1.2. Not to mention they would have kept most of the people that have cancelled but are not included in those numbers because of the free 30 days. My guess it they will bleed 600k minimum next quarter. Looks like it's time for me to start trading options again!

I felt it would be at maybe 1.5 million. So worse than I thought it would be. And this quarter will not be the real revealer like the next two will be IMO.

Yes, I went into the fine print just now... Seems, well... somewhat deceptive.
Godwin's Law for SW:TOR -- As a discussion in the SW:TOR forums grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving WoW or being told to "go back to WoW" approaches 1.
