The wonders of a massive marketing campaign won't last forever. There was only one other MMO with so many ad campaigns and that was WoW. Or did you ever see a LOTRO, Tera or Anarchy Online ad anywhere? LOL kids do not know the powers of massive ad campaigns...

Yep. Which is a 58% drop. Suddenly, 25% doesn't look to shabby, does it?

Ya. I found that interesting too. This would actually point to a marketing failure on BW's part since they have been actively claiming to be targeting the casual audience all along. It would seem, that of the subs, only us hardcores really remain. A strange irony to be sure. lol

While holding 1.3 million subscriptions would be a good thing for a startup MMO, we're talking about a well known franchise in Star Wars combined with the expert storytelling of BioWare. EA invested truckloads of money in to this game, and I have a feeling they are concerned about the drop in subscriptions.

On the positive side they are continuing to expand in other countries, and we could very well see an explosion of new players and subscriptions across the pond. With that being said, I'm still deeply worried about the long term success of this game. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if EA overrules here and demands that SWTOR go F2P, looking at the models of other games that were struggling before and now succeeding such as LOTRO and D&D.

Some salient points actually from the shareholder presentation, for those interested:
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic was the most successful subscription MMO launch in history
and is now firmly established as the #2 MMO in the west. The service is extremely strong
    on the operations level.
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic now has 1.3 million subscribers, with a much higher mix of
ongoing credit card consumers, but on a lower absolute number of subs. The service is
stable, profitable and we have strong plans to grow it in fiscal 13.
  • Full game downloads were up 76% year-over-year. Origin contributed $48 million of non-
GAAP revenue, fueled by Mass Effect 3, Star Wars: The Old Republic and revenue
generated from our third-party publishing relationships.
  • The 143% growth in subscriptions, advertising and other revenue was driven by the
December launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic.

And for the official update on Star Wars:
  • "Let me provide you with an update on Star Wars:
Through the end of the quarter, approximately 2.4 million units have sold through. In our last
call we indicated that we had 1.7 million active subscribers, and as of the end of April we now
have 1.3 million, with a substantial portion of the decrease due to casual and trial players
cycling out of the subscriber base, driving up the overall percentage of paying subscribers.
We have already launched a number of initiatives designed to grow subscriptions. The initial
responses have been positive and we are encouraged by the gaming community’s reaction.
In summary, we delivered an extraordinary launch of a solidly profitable long-term franchise,
which contributed to both our gross and operating margin improvements in fiscal 12. We expect
this title will further expand our margins in fiscal 13 as we get the full year benefit of subscription
    revenue.
Let us give you two additional points of perspective as it relates to our current subscriber base
and its impact on our fiscal 13 guidance. First, the current number of active subscribers, 1.3
million, is very consistent with the original assumptions we made when we acquired BioWare in
2008. Second, while this franchise is very profitable, it only represents a mid-single digit
percent of our total profitability in fiscal 13.

Of course! Every Corp cares primarly about the bottom line figures....% of profits.

Probably why I have spent the last 35 minutes waiting to get in a WZ at lvl 50. WTB server mergers or cross server queues.

What's this? Seems Bioware is doing something tricky to my account and slightly underhanded...

Now I'm pissed off, I only just discovered this. So, I cancel my account in March. On April 16th, I get an email giving me 1 week of playtime for free. So I use that playtime to PvP. Then I get an email on April 20th offering me 30-days for FREE if I resubscribe. So, I resubscribe for the free 30 days. However, seems they CHARGED me on April 22nd, but won't charge me until June 21st now...

So... Bioware charged me instantly for the free 30-days and deferred that free time to the next month... That's kind of dirty.
actually you failed to read the free 30 day add... it specifically says it will only be given to current subscribers and will be added to the END of your current payment cycle... so to qualify you had to re-sub to have an active account which means you would be charged for that month and, as it states clearly, the free month is added to the end of your current sub... so the next month is free
