On December 31 they had 1.7 million subscribers. End of April they had 1.3 million subscribers. They have lost 400,000 subscribers, including players in their 30-day initial periods. The math is not complex.

BioWare claim that subscriber numbers haven’t dropped, but concurrent users at peak times have. This, Erickson says, is the reason why players are noticing a lot of ‘light’ server populations – and also why mergers are on the cards, but not a priority.

Yeah I predicte the same here.

So 1.3 is a bit lower than I expected, but still not a disaster. BW really do have to pull their socks up though. On mature reflection, coming back to the game after a break, the game still doesn't feel like a virtual world.

Making the space travel and combat more integrated into the ground combat would help a lot I think.

(I can't believe that after 4 months you still automatically take off when you enter your ship in a spaceport. You ought to be able to potter about in your ship in the spaceport, and see the spaceport through your windows, and then decide to take off. Just a small thing, maybe, but it's kind of indicative of a lack of integration somehow that makes the whole thing feel "bitty".)

Still, BW can still make a go of it I feel. But I'm no longer as confident of a steady rise in population after this point than I was. Unless more is done, the game may just gradually dwindle below the mil mark and end up with a couple of hundred thousand players in the end - it might take a bit more than a year, but there's a strong chance of it.

Myself, I can only foresee myself dipping into it now and then to check out all the class stories (which are mostly excellent, it has to be said), but it just doesn't feel like a virtual "place" I want to stay in.

Everybody saying about the free month, I thought the free month went into effect this month. But the report is only reporting up until March 31.

This is Month of May, they are reporting as of 2 months ago, even if the free month was last month April. That's still AFTER the March 31 reporting cutoff

The free month will go into the next report, inflating THOSE numbers

It still amazes me how BioWare failed to grasp this.

No there isn't. Aion is F2P now, in the US. No idea about in Asia, but most of its playerbase is in Asia. Same can be said for WOW.
Hi there, the link you provided proves the point you're trying to make wrong... see that part on the LEFT of that chart that has numbers IN THE MILLIONS, see how Aion is waay above the 1Mil mark, in fact it's around 2.3million!

It also shows that TOR DOES have less subs that Aion...

Um no my math is correct.

I graduated from Fanboy University and scored the highest on the state standard B.L.I.N.D. test.

As it stands now, 25% of players have left. However, 25% have just left to wash their cars and ride their bikes so by the time the summer starts 25% will have returned which equals 5 million subscriptions.

It is definitely a large hit, but SWTOR with it's current 1.3 million subscribers is by no means "dead". If by next quarter there is a drop below the 1 million mark in active subscribers, then it's a definitive cause for concern for the overall life and sustainability of this game.

Until then, anyone projecting doom'n'gloom for SWTOR is basing it off very little evidence, as we have only two quarters to report... one with a massive jump in sales, the other with a lesser decline in subscribers. The third and fourth quarter reports will paint a much more clear picture. I say patience until then. If you enjoy the game, keep playing it. If you don't, well, there are other MMOs out there that may be more for your liking.

Have you seen the server populations lately? There was already plenty of room for new subs. Rose colored shades... must be amazing to live that way.

It's possible people (like myself) are still subbed because we're waiting for new things to come around that will make the game better. Personally, I want the group finder. My guild doesn't do much as far as Flashpoints go, and I could go to another one but my friends are in the guild I'm in now.

However, we can't wait forever. MoP, GW2, D3, Tera, not to mention oldies like EQ2 are still viable.

Bioware knew this because those of us in beta told them so. No content past 50 and no group finder was going to kill the game.
