That may be, and it means SWTOR still has a lot of potential.

But a 25% drop is bad. Given the cost of the game to make (which was a lot, no matter which source you believe), the inclusion of the Star Wars IP, and the fact that the game is still only a few months old - a 25% drop is very bad.

Bioware should be concerned. That doesn't mean the game is already a disaster or it's 'past saving', but it's a bad trend that needs to be reversed.

Which they recouped most of before they charged a single credit card for a subscription. You guys do remember paying 50-120 to buy your release of the game that came with your first 30 days right? 2.2 million times 40-120 gets you most of 120 million, less some advertising and distribution. 2.2 mil times 40 is 88 mil after all and thats if only the low end sold. The break even point was in Febuary some time. Now they only have to meet operating costs which is a much lower threshold. Thats right you the Euro/NA through your sub paid for the asia and mideast launches. If BW is not in the black on this project they are doing it wrong.

These are Q1 numbers which do not include the two most recent launches in total. There is more than one month of data not in that report, which given that they have had only 5.5 months of operation, is a huge window into the game, but doesnt tell the whole story. They can probably expect a 60-70 % retention rate, which is well inside the industry standards, which given MMO cycles means we are near a low point right now.

Bioware icould be on a track to kill thier cash cow with poor programming (1.2 cough cough) and management (the PR around 1.2 cough cough), but they could still turn that around. They have the business model generally right, they just need to work on their failing areas, and they will be just fine. It is clear this is the companies first MMO, and they are making all the first MMO mistakes, that just about every other MMO company has also made. So BW, send your programers (esp. qa) back to school, and the pr guys take to the woodshed.

Nuh un! This game will lose another 1.9 Million subs by June! That's right, there will be NEGATIVE players in the game by then!

Now think about that for a minute before you continue to flame people for citing articles over the dramatic drop in subscribers.

While its a bit worrying that the game is losing subs i think its nothing to worry about.

Ive read many times that this game only needs 500k subs for BW to make a decent profit, meaning FTP will never happen, well not for a long time at least, as this game will always have at least 500k subs imo.

A lot of ppl are determined to see this game fail, i dont know why

Server merges are needed though.

Only if the drop was sufficient enough to affect the product's profitability. Which I don't think we've reason to believe at the moment.

The prepared statements are now available on their site. Not sure if this was posted already.

Let me provide you with an update on Star Wars:
Through the end of the quarter, approximately 2.4 million units have sold through. In our last
call we indicated that we had 1.7 million active subscribers, and as of the end of April we now
have 1.3 million, with a substantial portion of the decrease due to casual and trial players
cycling out of the subscriber base, driving up the overall percentage of paying subscribers.

We have already launched a number of initiatives designed to grow subscriptions. The initial
responses have been positive and we are encouraged by the gaming community’s reaction.
In summary, we delivered an extraordinary launch of a solidly profitable long-term franchise,
which contributed to both our gross and operating margin improvements in fiscal 12. We expect
this title will further expand our margins in fiscal 13 as we get the full year benefit of subscription
revenue.

Let us give you two additional points of perspective as it relates to our current subscriber base
and its impact on our fiscal 13 guidance. First, the current number of active subscribers, 1.3
million, is very consistent with the original assumptions we made when we acquired BioWare in
2008. Second, while this franchise is very profitable, it only represents a mid-single digit
percent of our total profitability in fiscal 13
