Nice try.

Hold on let me find where BIOWARE said themselves.
Read the article. All it says is BW has to sell 1M copies at $60 and have those people subscribe for "years on end"

Doesn't give a specific number. Even if you crunched the numbers, thats $60M box sales +$15M a year in subs for a period of time they don't specify. Could be $75M or $120 over 4 years. Still nowhere near $300M.

Nice try.

Doing some math here... 1.3 subs.. I'll be generous and say there are about 5000 players complaining here so that makes it about .3% of the player population that cry foul and think this game is no good and dying....

Numbers speak for themselves.
Wait, are you trying to say that just because people don't post, they can't agree with the people who do? We know the forum represents a statistical minority of players in the game, but there is no evidence to suggest that any one opinion represented on the forum represents a majority or minority opinion as part of the total player population.

The forums are representative, though I will grant that representation can be skewed. However, there's no evidence to say one group's opinion is any more numerous than the others'.

25% (round up) drop does sound bad, but you have to compare to today's market not what is 3 years ago or even 5 years ago.

There is a finite amount of people who are willing to pay for MMO. The industry as a whole is trying to get piece of that pie. People buy games ALL the time and play for a little bit and then quit (usually after 30 days of play time some might go for another 30)

The players are usually fickle. Some might stay for the long haul, some might quit after 1st month. 1.3 mil sub is actually not bad. It does provide revenue to continue development. I DO NOT KNOW the upkeep cost for SWTOR (server farms cost, utilities, programmers, designers, devs, that directly relate to SWTOR team) so 20 mil might not be much a month (but I doubt it cost THAT much each month to run it..... I hope)

I am hoping that Bioware is working hard to retain their IP. Every company is, but at the same time, we the players, may not know all what they know. We DO know what we like, but then again we have to ask ourselves..... why did we quit the "other game" if they had those features? (it can be ANY game not just the big names)

I think we are looking for something different and I hope BW can bring that different to keep the sub going. If not, then it would be just another "game" where people can go and try something else.

That would not affect Q4 2012 results, which ended March 31, 2012.

Edit - someone says it doesn't count. Fair enough. still down from 2.2 mil to 1.3
Negative again...where did you get the 2.2 number...official release from previous quarterly report was 1.7 million...hence the title of the thread "subs down 25%" or rather more accurately ~ 23.5%....

1) by people such as yourself looking at the stat and saying 'hey, 1.3 millions sub. thats pretty damn good for an MMO, hell Warcarft is the only other mmo with 1m+ figures, thats pretty great news.

2) by people like me taking a holistic view of ALL the stats that have been made available since launch. 2 million sales. 1.7m subs retained by march. 1.3m subs retained by may 7th.

Regardless of the figure itself, the downward trend is shockingly bad when you consider how much money and time was poured into this game, along with the IP itself which is ofc a very strong one. Even as the article suggests, the drop was 4 times bigger than the analysts expected it to be (although i take what an article says with a pinch of salt when it reports on what 'analysts think'.)Even so the point remains, the drop was a big one.

Now i am NOT saying that swtor is dead. far from it, 1.3m as people like you say, is a great figure. The problem is, bleeding 300k subs from launch to march (3 months from launch), then a further 400k from march to may (2 months since last call), when u consider 2 big content patches have been released is NOT a good thing, it is not promising for the future, and if you are still playing this game then you must worry that this trend will continue.

Someone above was saying they would be happy with the whiners all leaving etc. which is pretty standard for forums but completely stupid and a lack of foresight. Yes the quote has been that 500k subs will keep this game afloat, but you can bet your *** moeny wont be pumped into it at the same rate you would like it to and ofc that will have an effect on rate and quality of future content.

So lastly, in response to your quote above. it may ver well have been the best launch comparing figures to Warcraft. The problem iis, in 3 months time when it takes another 400k sub hit are you still going to be trumpeting 'hey, we may be losing subs at an alarming rate but the current figure and launch is still the best since wow!!'. Then 3 months on the same thing etc until you're pretty much left with a game that had a strong start, then fizzled out and died after a year. The trend is pretty blatant that swtor is falling on its *** and without some massive changes to stop a huge chunk of player base loss each fiscal quarter, pretty soon some people will have their wish and this will just be another small time mmo barely sc****** maintenance income.
Very well said. The easiest thing they can do to limit the subscription bleed is to drop many many of their servers, and they need to do that 2+ months ago. I highly doubt as many people would leave over losing their characters name as compared to the number of people who left because of dead servers.
How do you measure the success of an MMO?
