What will happen to guilds? Will we have to re-make them entirely?

I support SWTOR for Macs!

Everyone flatly says there will be no mergers. What happens 3 months after character transfers are available?

The low pop servers will not only lose the people willing to reroll, now they lose everyone who wasn't willing to reroll but willing to transfer. This ultimately convinces the final holdouts to be willing to transfer. I mean is there a population rating lower than "Light". Will they start listing a server's population as "None" but leave it online?

EA did this same garbage with WAR. They grossly overestimated their launch, and released way too many servers. Then they're stuck with a bunch of ghost servers, and have to provide transfers and yes, GASP, mergers to fix the problem. Unfortunately, that creates a perception of weakness and failure, that leads to more and more people leaving, and more and more servers dying.

Personally if I was planning a MMO I'd try with all my might to minimize the total amount of servers. Try and emulate EVE but with a theme park feel. In reality though, looking at the server list, there should be:

PVE East 1-5
PVE West 1-5
PVP 1-5
RP ... well who cares about those anyways. j/k I don't know how populated those are so I wont guesstimate.

There should probably be at most 10-15 servers right now though and I feel like theres more like 30-40, although I haven't actually counted...

Also why is there always such segregation between world regions and servers? I like when a server has a good international population. Creates a good feel of 24/7 activity, plus it broadens our horizons and exposes us to people from around the world. Win-win.

To be fair, this isn't true. They were attempting to limit the servers to a manageable level when the community made the choice for them, forcing the opening of additional servers.

Tech and software limitations.

Moving everyone off of a low-pop server then closing the server is a "transfer", not a "merger".

A "merger" is when two server clusters are "merged", that is economy, loot tables, software, everything, resulting in both clusters remaining online. This method is largely no longer used by MMO developers because it is incredibly buggy, convoluted, messy, and usually results in more upset players.

What's more likely than a "merger" is a "transfer/shut-down", where no economy, loot tables, etc. are actually merged. The low-pop server cluster is just shut down.

Out of all the RP servers I play on, every one of them are fairly high-pop. There's no way they'd all fit on one server!

Too little too late.

Before release, any new MMO needs to design the framework for merging servers and character transfers. It's common sense. SWTOR's failure to do so is going to cost it dearly.

Many of us can't play the game content due to lack of population. So many of us will be leaving for other games. Will we come back? Who knows . . . it's never good to have your customers "temporarily" go elsewhere.

EDIT: man the forum censorship is crazy here, they close 90% of negative feedback threads

They did have it in place. They were using the industry standard. SWTOR's character data ended up being different than what is standard in the industry, however, and the usual method of transferring that data could not handle the task. When this was discovered the developers began designing a new system.

Screw this game, let it follow the path of warhammer. Not like bioware cares so why should we.
