I have to say I am not happy about paid transfers. BioWare created this mess by opening too many servers and now they are going to charge players so they can move to a server with a good population. That does not sit well with me.

I do not see how that can be hindsight. Every MMO since World of Warcraft has had to consolidate servers a few months after release. I do not know why Bioware thought TOR would be the exception.

In beta they should have developed the plan to either let people sit in queue and control the amount of servers or create more servers soon after release and have server merge protocol readily available.

They made the same mistake every MMO for the last seven years had made, they added more servers to compensate for the popularity of release then failed to have swift measures for combining servers when the they slowed down.

They have to open it to specific servers first unless they choose to do merges before. If they allow everyone to go anywhere nothing will change people will just swap places or go to fatman until it is full leaving a bunch of empty servers. If they allow transfers from the low servers to the 'standard' it will empty the dead servers so they can close them and then the remaining servers will have sustained players rather than their 2mil subscribers split between hundreds of servers and time zones giving the appearance of no players.

MMO forums never fail to disappoint

Controlled server transfers, which is what they appear to be going with, is the best way to do it. Likely they will have specific servers they want to "fill" and offer free transfers to those from anywhere, and once those fill up they will target others to repeat the process as needed.

If they had offered free transfers from anywhere to anywhere, it would be a complete disaster as everyone and their mother would try to get on the highest population servers causing the massive queues that people whined and cried their little heads off at launch about.

Friday prime time on US servers. There are 2 that are Full, 1 that is Very Full, half of the remaining are Standard, and the other half Light.

3 Full servers divided by how many Standard and Light servers? It won't have any impact and will only piss off the players that gave up their dead server to play on Full servers.

As much as I like to ***** I bet they will have a pretty wide selection of free server transfers so people can join their friends, then consolidate the remaining servers a bit later. At least that is their only logical option.

I can't argue since i don't know why every MMO developer had failed to see this coming. Perhaps there are inherent logistical difficulties ? Looming deadlines? Maybe it comes down to plain ol' hubris on Bioware's part. I don't know. Obviously, having a back up strategy on hand is preferable to not having one, but such is life.

Looking past all the would've, could've and should'ves - "What is the best way forward" is the more constructive question now.

At least I know for sure that there is no point renewing my subscription at this time. By July I will have long forgotten about this game as will the other 80% of the population that have left by then.

Way, way too little, way too late.

It's a strange phenomenon, but certain low pop servers will coalesce into the goto place.

Then it will be kind of like star wars.

I think many people are missing the point. They are offering free transfers to specific servers so that they are encouraging people from 3 to 4 low pop servers to all transfer.onto the same server. But as some people still want choice it is there just that you pay for it. If it was free transfer for all then the fatman would have 5 hour queues.
