It's possible that in the 4 other MMOs that I played, I just got lucky with my play times not falling on the maintenance cycles. That said, I was more of a junky back in the day, so I would be surprised that I wouldn't have noticed it at some point. Truth be told, I didn't really play WOW until the Lich King, so it was an established game at that point. I did play Rift & WHO at release though, and those games did not have weekly down times for maintenance.

It seems to me that they would be better served to schedule these maintenance times differently for each timezone. So all PST servers would have their maintenance at 3 am, just like the East coasters enjoy now. Seems like a reasonable solution.
Rift had DAILY downtime at release. Even multiple times a day.
Nice lies.

They have weighed the advantages and disadvantages of having different server maintenance times, and concluded it was best to have a single global maintenance time. The specific time was picked to affect the fewest number of players, globally.

Per torstatus.net, the server up time is 97.3%. I realize some players are disproportionately affected, but in the grand scheme of things, I really don't see a cause for complaint.

I understand the OP's plight, but think of this way.

Some server maintenance there are patches. What if a group of servers are patched before the other server who's maintenance is later? sometimes a patch can really screw up a client that is not match with a server. Then you have players who are trying to play on a non-upto-date patch server and complain.

This way if there is a patch, all servers are the same. This is bad for international players, but that is how the cookie crumbles.

DAOC had weekly maintenance on Mondays.
WOW has weekly maintenance.
WHO I don't know about
Rift had DAILY Downtime!!!

I don't know where you've been during those times, but they all have downtime. It's all part of running a server farm. I feel for you that it interferes with your schedule. I got my wife into playing WoW and now she is hooked right along with me. I don't catch any aggro. Anyway, I hope this doesn't sour you on the game. Best Regards.

Oh, and perhaps I'll see you in Guild Wars 2.

You obviously have very, very little knowledge of computers. Tell me, did you ask what Windows was when you read it on the requirements for those games? Just kidding.

Maintenance is much more than just throwing up a patch. If it was just a patch every week, I could understand you being a bit frustrated, but it isn't. First, they like to create back ups. Remember that accidental rollback we had a week or two ago? Well, what if one of these days we actually needed to do that, but were unable to because they didn't create back ups of the previous version? I even back up things on my computer any time I change a program or add anything fairly large. I have a 500 gig external for just such occasions.

Also, I wonder what your computer looks (and probably sounds) like. My computer isn't even running as much or as hard as these servers, and I shut my computer down to give it maintenance at least once a week or more. I open it up, spray it out with some compressed air to get all of the dust out, I clean the air filters, blow out the fans, etc. After I boot it back up, I do a disc clean, defrag, run my antivirus, antimalware, and antispyware programs.

This is part of the reason why I can run this game easily on a 5 year old computer with very few problems. I take care of my computer so that it will last longer and run better. Honestly, with how much their servers are running, I'd be amazed if they didn't do this every week. Hell, if I was them I would be doing this twice a week, but then again I also am a little obsessive with keeping my tech running well.

edit - you played WoW and didnt notice weekly maintenance? Yeah, right

That's kind of harsh, like the OP, I myself am a dad and do not get to play as often as family and responsibilities take up my time. I hope others realize this game is not played solely by the younger generations. I am likely one of (unsilent) many who saw the movie when it released back in the 1970's. So please try to have some understanding for those of us whom feel inconvenienced but do not wish to change to another MMO.
Keep it smooth.

I'm a West coast dad with 3 kids and a wife. I don't start playing until 10 - 10:30 pm on the 3 nights a week that I let myself play. Unfortunately, one of those nights is Monday night which falls on their schedule every damn week. And with my luck, another night is Thursday which also had maintenance last week. Very frustrating indeed.

Anyone know why they require weekly maintenance times? This is my 5th MMO (DAOC, WOW, WHO, Rift), and none of the others were down like this. And why can't they start it in the wee hours of the night at say 2 - 4 am? Midnight is still relatively early.

Anyway, as much fun as I'm having with SWTOR, this maintenance is close to chasing me away. Has BW given any indication that this is a temporary deal, or is this maybe not the game for my schedule?
Weekly downtimes are here to stay. They are not going anywhere.

I got 99 problems but downtime aint one. WoW has weekly maintenance, Rift has weekly maintenance. More or less every mmo has weekly downtime. And with major patches like 1.2 there will always be unscheduled downtime to fix something that slipped through the cracks.

Meh. More often than not the downtime isnt any longer than an hour or two unless they have to configure servers for a patch or hotfix. I think on Thursday the servers were only down for 2 hours. 4 hours is just an estimate in case an issue arises.

It's essential anyways. I don't think you would want to see what would happen if they let the servers run 24/7.
