But just because you took the name Blackavaar on every server doesn't mean that the harassing player couldn't take BIackavaar, B1ackavaar, 8lackavaar, etc etc, and still besmirch your name. Small differences, yes, but that doesn't mean it won't still affect you.

I have imagination because I come up with different characters with different names.
I do have an imagination and I can think of a multitude of different names, none of which would be a copy-paste from any other source material. But this name in particular is one that I have used since I played PNP D&D. I have used it in every game I have ever played. It is always my primary character and it identifies me in the game world. Others using faux versions of the name would not affect me as much as someone using the exact name and that is why I make sure to save it on every server on every game I have ever played. That doesn't mean I don't have characters with many other names.

Some of my other character names (feel free to copy these for your server if you like).

Aash
Abba
Danazul
Dekra
Ori'kahn
Threil
Tulut
Virgot
Xaax
Yadira-Ro

And that's just a few of them.

As for your character deletion idea, if this were only characters for which no progression had been made, sure. Otherwise, no. Players want the freedom to be able to come back to the game and still have their characters intact. Developers know this.

CoH has a similar limitation whereas characters on inactive accounts below level 6 are deleted from time to time. If TOR adopted a similar policy then I would not have a problem with it, though I would go to the trouble of playing every single one of my saved name characters to the minimum level in order to assure the name continued to be saved.

Note: My name save is not just to keep a popular name that many people want. My name save is to keep my name. It's not popular by any account and most likely no one else would ever want it.

I'm honestly kind of surprised that you are actually planning to play all of those characters but I suppose it is possible. However, I will also go out on a limb and postulate that I do not believe most people who reserve a bunch of names will actually get around to them at some point. As such, I suspect that this BW policy was designed to curtail that type of behavior or at the minimum, lessen the impact. Unfortunately, you may just be an outlier who were also negatively impacted by this change but it does not take away from the overall intent.

What if I were to make a character with the same name as yours (assuming it is a specific identifying name and not some faux name copied from the movies) on another server and then went around being a ninja and griefing people ...
This is ridiculous. Most people understand that "name/server" are different characters. Only the people who go to stupid lengths to reserve names appear to NOT understand this. Reserving names only serves the narcissism that appears to run rampant here, and denying other people the right to use a name that does not belong to you is selfish egoism.

I wish multiple instances of names were allowed in conjunction with different surnames, but the surname has become an obligatory "reward" in MMOs for some reason. I also wish there was a fair way to prohibit reserving names.

Good I am not the only one that feels this way.

Dude, I have a friend that had someone do exactly what I was describing to him on EQ. It got so bad that people would insult him every time he made a post on their forums.

Don't tell me that most people know better because that is not the case. Most people are ignorant and lazy and do not bother to do any research to find out the facts before they start throwing around insults.

Have you considered that the names you reserve, but never get around to using, are preventing other people who wish to use that name, and who will use that character, from doing so?

Delete your characters.

No. First come first serve. Pick another name.

No need - the names you listed above do not appeal to me. And you will delete your characters over the cap because Bioware are making you.

Have a nice day

Seriously, if you use those characters fine. If you just reserve them and block others you are just an arse.

They're not making me do anything. All of my characters above the newly established limit are just fine. I just can't create any new characters. And nobody else even wants to use my name on any other servers.

They want to use Han and Luke and Obi and Ben and Helmet and Lonestar and Legolas and Drizzt and every other copycat name that millions of imagination-less people use for their characters. Those are the saved names they want to free up.
