Legacy surnames do not make sense

In case no one has pointed it out yet there is one good thing. If you know a guy and his surname as a good player and you come to another char that has the same last name you know that its the same player and then you'll want to play with them. This is also helpful for finding a friends new char in a busy place like the fleet space station.

You know you can choose to not display it at all or display it as a title underneath your name so it doesnt look like a last name

Aren't surnames at the end of Chapter 1, regardless of level? I got mine at 32.

OP, the only reason you have a surname is because it was passed down from a parent. Your future characters are meant to be relatives, so they get it from level 1. So when was the first surname made, ever? When they decide to make it. So in your first character's case (The parent, who's parent didn't have a surname), (s)he makes one in a certain point in his/her life. In the case of SWTOR, it is at the end of chapter one (Or whatever level you get it).

Pretty sure there's an option to turn the display off.

I'm convinced it has to do with actually tracking your rewards across your account. I might be wrong.

The Purebloods are a mix of the original Sith species, and the largely human Dark Jedi exiles. Take it from there. If you can't come up with something, oh well.

See above.

I don't even roleplay, and even I can see how it works. That you have no imagination is your own problem.

Disagree.
anyone can make up reasoning for just about anything. that doesn't automatically make it not stupid anymore.

I have an imagination, maybe you should think before speaking..my imagination is why I want seperate surname from the legacy name. Because y'know if you want to stick to the "han solo was part of the skywalker legacy" Han still had a last-name..Solo...regardless of what "Legacy" you would put him into as an analogy.

So without making up my own characters with my own backstory fitting into where the class stories start..instead I have to think of some hair-brained reason why so-and-so is related somehow to each and every character?

because Han's lastname was Skywalker since he was in the Skywalker Legacy...and Luke's last name was Solo in the Han Solo Legacy.

Having the "Legacy" is fine..but we need seperate surnames to display

And you suggest turning the display off? then why even have the darn thing? Exactly my point. It's a stupid system when I would be forced to turn it off so I don't see it on all but the character it was meant to apply too.

The Legacy system, as is, is stupid beyond belief. We should have seperate lastnames in addition to the "Legacy" if BioWare is set on sticking with this thing.

And your "limitations to the story" as an excuse to why it's dumb to have your sibling/child/etc/etc doing EXACTLY what you did is just terrible attempt at excusing the idiocy of the system.

And there can be no technical reason why the Legacy name is unique, as it's linked to your account, which is unique, nothing further is required. And yes I do know for sure. 100% Its a mere design choice.

I think the legacy idea is great, but a couple things are too limited. You should be able to have a last name if you want. Just like you have a first name. Yes, in the past people didn't have last names, blah blah blah, but in an advanced society people tend to need them to distinguish them selves from the thousands of others with the same first name.

And you are saying if you chose a bad name to bad for you? Except you do this at 30, so no quick re-rolls after realize you don't really like that name. And if you want to think about it, the choose a name screen pops up every time you zone apparently. I had 4 Characters going by the time I chose my legacy name, and it was hard to think of a last name I wanted for all of them.
its essentially a RP element that RPers aren't happy with.
Why should a game mechanic force you to make your RP a certain path?

And as it is now you can't search for a friends legacy name, so unless you happen to run into them and notice its the same name, it doesn't help much.

The other things I don't like about legacy are linking unlock races to your current characters, and linking both sides with only 8 slots per server!

A million missing the point points . . . . . . to you
We want last names, just not the SAME one for all characters.

I haven't been a fan of the Legacy surnames since they announced it, and now the more I think about it, the more I think it's a terrible idea for several reasons.

1) It doesn't make sense that your character "earns" his surname. What does Joe Smith do in life to earn the privilege of using the name Smith? Nothing. It's his name, and he has it from birth. There's no explanation for why characters suddenly earn their surname 30 levels into the story.

2) There's no reason for the Legacy surname to be a unique name. The only reason to have unique names is to be able to identify player characters on the server. We already have that with the characters' first names. Creating a unique identifying first name, and then 30 levels later creating a unique identifying second name is redundant. There's no logical reason why surnames have to be unique when first names are already unique.

4) There's no reason why all of my characters on the server should have the same last name. If I create a human Bounty Hunter and then Twi'lek Jedi Knight, why would they have the same last name? It doesn't make sense, and there's no reason for it.

5) Creating your character's name is a big deal for many people. Having a name that you like is important. In all MMOs, we have to create a unique name for our characters at character creation. Sometimes after a day or two, a player may decide that naming her character "Funnybunny" was not a great idea after all. It's not a big deal since it's a low-level character, she can just delete it and start over. If however we choose a Legacy surname we later decide was a bad idea, we're screwed. The character is level 30 now, so deleting and start over isn't a fair option. And we're not only stuck with it on this character, but every future character we make on that server. Granted, it would be my own fault for making up a dumb name, but still it's not a good system if it can put people in that position. I've seen posts in the New User help forum from people with this very problem. I think it's going to generate many tickets to GMs requesting to reset the name so it can be changed to something better.

These complaints and more came up during the beta (for the few days testers had to respond to this system when it was sprung up at the last minute). The idea of a Legacy system that gives you incentives and bonuses for creating new characters after leveling one is a good idea, but this implementation of surnames is illogical, will create problems for people, is bad for RP, and it should be changed.

I suggest the following changes should be made:

1a) Let us create a surname at character creation.
1b) OR if we can only create a surname at level 30, let us change it if we want to, to avoid being "stuck" if we made a mistake.
2) Make surnames not unique, meaning two or more players can have characters with the same surname.
3) Allow us to make different surnames for each of our characters on the server.
thanks for the blog.

I like it.

Turn it off if you don't.

God I hope they let me change it. Having switched to Sith I didn't realize that it was going to carry over.

I need something a little more evil. Dargo Fluffyhead doesn't really cause people to run.

Let alone anyone from the "Fluffyhead Legacy."

Please let me change this garbage.
