Yeah well its not going to happen because they have based the entire legacy system around this...its a little late now to start changing all of that...

Always in movement is the MMO future.

You really don't know how it'll end when they'll replace the producer and the lead designer, because, mark my words: it will happen.

New here.

Having watched the trailer for the Legacy system, I do think it's very cool, I like what's going to be available.

But I do admit that I wish the naming system was optional. Mainly for points 3 & 4 in the OP. I have 3 characters, all different races, so it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for them to have the same surname, because how do I make a Miraluka, Twi'lek and Rattataki related to each other? Oh well, I guess in the world of fantasy and sci-fi, anything is possible, LOL. I already have a name picked out, but I've always associated it with one character (I've played in various games). Would like to be able to give them their own individual legacies, but I guess this will have to do.

Remember you can have the Legacy as a title instead of a surname. For example my Legacy name Blackthorne.

Gilmore Blackthorne (my JK)
Nemus, the Blackthorne legacy (my SW)

Well, I don't know what gender are your characters but assuming there's one male and one female, what about this? Male and female are life partners and the third character is your step brother who was adopted by your parents? Or your adopted child? Everything's possible, just use your imagination

1) It doesn't make sense that your character "earns" his surname. What does Joe Smith do in life to earn the privilege of using the name Smith? Nothing. It's his name, and he has it from birth. There's no explanation for why characters suddenly earn their surname 30 levels into the story.

See, now if Legacy also included a "Clan" relationship option instead of being purely blood related content, the surname would totally be fine.

If one was able to choose their legacy relationships it'd be fine, but as we're currently stuck with only blood-related options, my rataki slave inquisitor is hardly related to my twi'lek consular, let alone their sith pureblood juggernaut "sister".

This is what happens when you take a launch feature and delay it by several months, it doesn't make sense.

People who are idiots could also harass you on alts because of the legacy name, sure you can ignore them but you shouldn't have to worry about being stalked or needing to hide your name.

I think names should be to the individual character, the whole family tree legacy just sounds gimmicky and will monotize the game. Oh your Dad was a Sith now you can force choke people as a bounty hunter.

In Everquest was back in the day when you hit level 20 you could pick a surname which was difference for each of your characters it was nice. You could even have the same last name as friends to be part of their family so to speak.

Forcing all your characters to have the same legacy name and be in the same family seems like a bad attempt to formulate a new system, which has potential. The system just takes away more MMORPG freedoms than it provides. Maybe I want to raid with my online family and role play instead of never seeing the family that shares the same name as me in game.

I'm going to address two points that came up in this thread:

1. The "permanent" surname.
I think it was announced somewhere that you would be able to change your legacy surname (eventually).

2. I don't want my characters to all be part of same family.
You don't have to have them be. One of the options for the legacy is "ally". You can have your characters simply be friends. I also remember reading on another site (can't remember which one) that there is also a "rival" option. You don't need to have your characters have familial ties, you can also add them to the legacy as friends or possibly even as enemies.

My biggest problem with the surname thing is this My uncle's surname is Smith, I am Davis, we are still related even tho our surnames are different. y is this a problem? at least implement a friend system that uses this single common surname if we have to have only one surname give it a use....
