Most people don't use cardinal directions normally. Left/right is more familiar and gets a quicker reaction.

This is exactly why I opt away from east/west in all games, the maps are never consistent from one to another. So while it works just like the others its not as intuitive, the others only take common sense. Which granted, is lacking in many people as well.
