Why is the word filter on the forums so easily offended?

Bar the occasional outburst under difficult circumstances I am not usually prone to using poor language but I have noticed that the word filter on these forums seems to go way overboard on limiting free expression.

I'll give an example.. A three letter acronym of, what the f... *** is filtered. Seems a bit harsh. I turn a blind eye. I don't know if variations of that would work but lets try one.. What the hell? WTH? Presumably that is offensive to the devout.

I was just comparing someones comments to a person with limited cerebral abilities and tried to use a word starting with 'r'. ******** - and it hits the spam filter.

Now I wasn't aware that either of these words were obscene. The latter might be deemed insulting but its hardly obscene. Restrictions like this remove our ability for critical free inquiry and rebuttal and I protest rather strongly especially given I am still waiting to get in game.
