AION, Rift and Conan to name 3.
No to mention playing a MMORPG for a few hours here and there in the beta preview does not even scratch the surface of all the things in the game.

Gw2 is simply a PvP game with a PvE added on. The no loot thing really turns me off from the game. Yeah it will probably be fun for a while, but without a progression path (loot) I think it will fail to have that carrot these games have. Even PvP gets boring without rewards. No matter how epic it is. At one time you will ask yourself why the hell am I doing this? I dont get nothing for it.

Different strokes, I play fps games all the time, I enjoy the PvP in the 10-49 bracket in TOR because it's mostly balanced excluding a few highly geared out toons in the upper 40's. When I want something *low intensity* but competitive I turn to MMO's. Lots of other people turn to DOTA styled games.

If they had an optional "gear irrelevant" WZ setting at 50 that bolstered everyone to comparative power levels so that it was good teamwork and skilled players that won all games, I'd never uncheck the button. It doesn't need to provide Commendations, or Money, or Valor, it just needs to be fun.

I get no satisfaction from killing people I outgear, and am equally bored by being killed by people that outgear me.

I like competition. PvP in games like WoW and ToR bore me because there is no competition unless many arbitrary hamster wheels have been ridden to achieve equilavent gear/statistics on both sides. Often it's not the best players in the competitive brackets of these grindy games, it is the best players amongst those that don't have jobs.

This x100...GW2 is almost a completely different subgenre of MMO than most everything on the market currently, and for the people that actually like the loot treadmill/raid progression style that game wont be more then something to try out for a few days. Hell, even most of the pvpers i come across are all about getting the best gear, not just improving their skills.

And on another note anybody who thinks D3 is gonna pull a large chunk of the MMO market is nuts becuase.....ITS NOT AN MMO. Thats about as stupid as saying the next Halo is gonna kill wow/swtor. In fact D2 was more of an mmo than D3 will be, becuase they cut the max game size in half, from 8 players to 4!
Computer specs

If somebody was standing on a street corner screaming "This town sucks, I'm moving!" you'd think he was crazy, right? I quit threads are the same thing.

I agree with you completely, different strokes!

GW1 sold a crap load of boxes and they still have people playing to this day so they must be doing something right. But IMO its just not a RPG where you play to acquire power over time, and thats what I like. I like my carrots, not equality.

i don't understand the gw2 hype. maybe i'm just completely ignorant of the game, but there isn't even any world pvp aside from the organized "server wars" that are on a schedule (lol). i suppose that could excite some people, and it is a unique concept for sure, but i don't understand why you people think it's going to have that much of an effect on swtor. they are totally different, and if i may, gw2 just sounds bad from my perspective. i literally have no inclination to even try it. if i want an epic battle on a relatively even playing field where skill is a larger factor, i'll play bf3.

as for gw1, i get that there are still people playing it, but that doesn't mean much. there are still people playing bad novalogic games and that doesn't mean they are good.

The only reason I bought that game was because it was 5 bucks...$5.00

wasted, imo.

Never even bought it. My brother did and he played it all of about 2 hours. there was absolutely no z axis in the game lol, could not even jump.

I agree that games like GW2 and D3 will not make a serious, long-term dent into MMOs like SWTOR. The main difference is psychological because of the different payment model. With no monthly fee these games can be played much more casually without the users feeling like they need to play a ton to get their money's worth.

In some ways, I think these games will help SWTOR because it will help tide over gamers who are waiting for more content. Similar to how a game like Syrim caused activity levels--but not subs--to dip for WoW.

GW1 was a fun experience...for a while. Eventually the lack of loot and reaching max level means there is little or no progress anymore, and the game becomes too static and dull. I ended feeling like I was grinding insane amounts just to get a different looking outfit. So I stopped playing.

I suspect the same thing will happen in GW2: I will enjoy it for a while, but then the lack of progression will give me little or no incentive to keep coming back.

My guess is many servers will be merged at that time or alternatively alot of dead servers.
I dont see how selling 6k copys in the US in a week, which is like 8k with digital sales, can counter any amount of players that quit.
