agreed

Wasn't ME based off unreal or did it use it's own engine?

Making a decision based on the result of an RNG is hardly "fair" since most game developers care too little to program it to do anything even close to "random" number generation.

It takes the possibility of someone stealing loot that isn't designed for them, or ninjaing for a companion. No /roll is pretty astonishing.

And why should I care, the customer? I could care less about how easy it is for the developers to create the game. I want more in 2012 than a game that looks like it was half baked back in 2006 with game mechanics that everyone on the planet is bored with. Hero engine is boring. Even the cut scenes in TOR are just a complete copy paste from other games. When a NPC is "defiant" he/she does the old "move forward a bit menacingly and wave your arms in front" crap. I don't think I have seen so much copy and paste in my life from other games animations.

So how is it that other MMO's can come up with their own game engines, with a much much msaller budget and still come out with good games? Just look at the new MMO's coming up: Guild Wars 2, Planetside 2, and even EVE Online which has been revamped completely since it's beginnings and performs way better with 1200-2000+ ships on screen all shooting each other. And yet WoWTOR, oops I mean SWTOR, looks like something that we would get if George Lucas sodomized Clone Wars and gave birth to this.

Hero engine was a bad decision for a longevity viewpoint. It's an ugly engine, its cookie cutter, and above all its boring. I don't care if its easier for the devs.

If you use the roll system, the ML can't reward his friends or the "girl" he's been chatting with or refuse loot as punishment to the guy who "didn't pull his weight."

Duh.

If you are worried about people needing on off-spec equipment or equipment for companions, spell it out at the beginning of the run.

I have a great many criticisms of this title but how it looks is not one of them. With everything maxed out and running smoothly, its right up there.

That remains to be seen. Unreal 3 engine is clearly superior for single player games. Even Bioware prefers it for their Mass Effect series.

Unreal 3 is so far untested on MMO environment except for TERA (released last year in APAC, yet to be released in US/EU). We don't know how it handles really large grps of players.

On the other hand--

The financially most successful MMO in history wrote and use their own game engine.
50 Sorc Healer/DPS
- We Brake For Nobody - (RIP)
Empire US-West PvE soon-to-be defunct raiding guild
(5/5 Eternity Vault HM, 5/5 Karagga's Palace HM)

Not sure if the game engine has much to do with it. But TERA has not exactly amazed gamers in APAC.
