Pretty sure you can skip that too and just PvP and do whatever else tickles your fancy.

Really, the only thing that's mandatory is skipping as much content as possible to get to 50 and then cmoing to the forums to complain that the game has no content.

OP just doesn't get it. they are totally optional. one 2 of my toons, which are alts, i didn't do a single side mission, as i pvp'd and space missioned my xp to the appropriate level for the current class quest.

but thanks for making such a dramatic thread.

Which is total ******** for completionists and people that like to experience all of the story.
Incorrect.

The leveling experience for quests is optimized that you will always leave whatever planet you're on at the cap level for that certain planet, if you only do quests to get experience.

Interestingly, I've been doing a Sith Inquisitor and sticking to main story and "main planet" quests only, to see what's like; and indeed I've had to go do something else when the character got too underlevelled. Space combat (for the commendations, gonna get myself a pilot suit), soloing repeatable heroics, and sidequests have all been necessary in all planets so far.

Latest, for example, was Tatooine, where the main planet quest had me at one point at level 22, quest level 25, and mobs inside the instance at level 27 (two normals and a silver, and it was a bit too much). You do get hopelessly behind at some points.

Right now I just started Alderaan, level 24, and the planet is 28-32.

So at least in the case of the Inquisitor, yes, the main questlines are dramatically short of what you'd need to progress. There is an upside, and that's that doing quests that are +2 to +4 constantly nets (relatively) lots of XP, so if you grit your teeth and soldier on, you need to do a lot less sidestuff than if you're over the quest level. +3 seems to be the sweet spot.

YMMV
You call that a rant?

Because sig space is too restrictive.

But you can play without doing side quests. You just need to get extra xp from some other source (space missions, wzs, etc).

Sure can, I was just explaining in my example that I played specifically this way, and how much it fell short.

In fact, as I mentioned, if you are underlevelled but forge ahead, it cuts on how much side stuff you need to do, thanks to the wonders of the XP curve.

My 33 sorc has never done a side quest past 10 though I PvP like a mad man and I keep current with my class quests.

It is not hard to do nor do you have to do side quests as there are other option like space combat and PvP and mob grinding.

This posts of interest to me. I have an agent i am planning to play with US friends as time permits and as i have levelled 1 Jugg to 50, have a 45 Guardian and a second 38 Sith Warrior, i'm not terribly keen on going through all the side quests again without having (all) my companions along for the ride. My thought is to just do each planet's class story missions to progress my story as fast as possible so that i unlock my companions; then once i have my crew along. Go back and do each planets story and side missions.

I have a couple of friends who've offered to help me with all my story doors so even if i am lower level than what is listed i should manage to get it all done, my only conern is ome kind of hard "gate" if you will on instance entrances - what i mean is you MUST be level x to enter. Anyone know if that's in place?

Side quests are only mandatory if all you are doing is questing.

Do enough PVP/Ship missions/Flashpoints and not only can you skip side quests, you can skip entire bonus series.
