Do people prefer F2P MMOs?

No, I hate the 'pay to win' type games. Drives me crazy and ends up costing a ton more.

the only win in the Free to play DDO is....did we complete the quest/dungeon/raid? yes? win, no? try again.
To be fair, alot of content on DDO requires purchasing quest packs from the store and even tho you can theoretically level to 20 without buying anything it'd make for some really mundane playthrough running the same content over and over. Not only that but you get penalized for repeating content. I still believe DDO did it right though with F2P model and its brought out even more content/updates since they did this. I love the mechanics behind their quests/dungeon system and wish more MMOs copy that.

>Foreigners that dont speak english and just troll in general

>Hackers (Because who cares if you get banned, make a new account)

>Jerks (Because who cares if you get banned, make a new account)

>Pay to win (Skill no longer a factor)

>Nickle and Dimed to death

I don't mind Monthly subs until they also bring out a shop with microtransaction stuff. STO tried this and everyone left and if SWTOR try it I am sure people will react the same way.

Either pay monthly or have a shop but not both.

It's nice to have a choice to play only the free parts of the game. And purchase only specific stuff if you really trully really want . This is good for the customers ....
Well, f2p usually means you get crappier gear, very limited inventory and storage space etc.

What f2p usually does, is take out things you normally are used to and make you pay for them "if you want to".

It's a trap because by the time you have normal inventory space, storage space and a mount (because they make sure distances are big so you need one), you already spent 50 bucks or more.
Then you want good gear etc and little by little you play the game for a year and spend 200 bucks on it. It really isn't cheaper if you want the same experience...in the end it will cost you more.

Most MMO's that start with a sub and go f2p did it, because their game was failing. They then tell everyone how succesful the game has become...but it will never be as good as having a decent population with subs.

GW2 is doing something different in that respect. I am interested to see how that goes. For SWTOR I would think it bad to go f2p.

People like something for nothing. But you cannot name a single F2P MMO which could be considered amazing. They're either very casual, very old or it is a last ditch attempt for a studio to make money from an MMO which was simply unpopular due to poor quality.

Ultimately, you get what you pay for.

Perfect World games can be played for free its just rough lol.
Had friend who had cs pets worth hundreds of dollars and he didn't pay a penny.

Earned coin from dungeon drops played the market and bought everything with in game coin.

Thats the best way to do f2p imo make it so in game coin can be transferred to cs coin.

What P2P MMO is amazing? Just getting an idea where you're going with the idea that F2P MMOs are not amazing.

This may be true for most F2P MMOs, but it is not true for DDO and LOTRO. On the LOTRO forums some time ago once of the developers stated that the average customer that spends money on the game spends between $6-8 per month, and that the big spenders are paying $9-11 per month, with very very few spending more then $12 per month.

Guild Wars 2 is going to be a Buy to Play game where it will not be a Buy to Win game. They are going to keep the same concept for their store as they did for Guild Wars 1, which was not a pay to win model at all.

DDO and LOTRO are perfect examples of how to do F2P right.

There's no real PvP element in either game, so the Pay 2 Win aspect simply isn't there. Most of the stuff on the stores are things which help you level such as pots, XP boosts, and cosmetic stuff.

STO is doing extremely well as F2P also, all the stuff on the STO store can be bought with in game currency once you convert it to Cryptic Points, so if you play heavily you can get anything you want on the store without paying a cent.

Other F2P games can be very different, I think these tend to be the more Eastern designed games without a huge amount of content where you just have to grind to level.

I'd disagree with the comments on F2P games attracting idiots and kids, I've found the DDO, LOTRO and STO communities to be very mature and respectful. The same can't be said about many subscription based MMO's where the community eventually devolves into self-entitled spoiled children who think they own the game because they pay money every month.

Everybody has their own personal tastes in games, and just because a MMO is F2P doesn't mean that it's bad or that it's for kids or people who can't play a sub-based MMO. Or even that when an MMO goes F2P that it has failed, DDO, LOTRO and STO have all increased their active player base by going F2P and increased revenue.

One F2P which I thought was very well done was Allods Online, very much like WoW with some good game mechanics and gorgeous graphics.
