Actually, I think Bioware are trying to help us by targeting the most dangerous person nearby. Forget the guy directly in front of you, its the guy BEHIND you that you need to worry about....

Oh no wait, its just bad coding. /sigh.

On a serious note, it seems like its selecting in a conal direction from the cameras point of view, and not your toon (hence why it likes selecting people behind you, if they are near your camera) and closest to the centre of your screen.

That is a real pain.

I'm not sure I agree--I've definitely had tab select people behind me even while I was running forward with my camera centered, and there was a person directly ahead of me

Once again, the fanboys are against having more choices/options available ("why can't you be like me?" or, "I'm doing fine doing it 'this' way and I don't see a need for any improvement because other players think there can be better alternatives" or, "I can do without this, that, and that, and this, and that etc., why can't you?") or making things easier to handle ("lol spoiled by WoW; go back to WoW if you hate this" or "Intuitive interface? LOL it's called a 'learning curve'")

It's mostly annoying in PVP.

"Target nearest enemy"? ... Yeah, not so much -_-
I think the server is deciding which enemy it thinks you should be attacking! that is what TAB does *rofl*

drives me nuts sometimes, i think the bug in the code is it is using your "current" target as the "point" to determine the next nearest.. so once you get off target and it bounces far away sometimes it can ping pong awhile before moving back close to you.. often hitting esc a few times to clear target then hitting tab immediately picks up the closest target to you.

You have proposed an interesting and intriguing theory. I will endeavour to test this tonight.

Results of non-scientific non-test: inconclusive and confounding

Marked target scaling with distance can be turned off, but I find it kinda funny seeing the marker take up half the screen in an op.

Anyways, I haven't had any problems healing using the ops ui. I can understand if you're trying to actually click on a person out in the field and having problems, but I can't imagine why a healer would ever do that. DPS/tanks obviously have it a bit harder with the slightly wonky tab targeting, but it doesn't seem to me to be drastically hindering progress.

I have leveled two healers in game, a trooper and a consular. I have had no issues ''targeting'' players who need healing, or their companions.

It's rather simple really. You click on the face of the target you want in the group window, player or companion. Could it be improved? Yes, it would be nice to be able to click anywhere on the frame, not just on the face. Need to heal a player? Click his/her face or raid frame. Need to heal a companion, click his/her face or raid frame.

I don't see the issue here. You can't get much easier than that. If your trying to click on them in the play window, then your just wrong to begin with. Your making it 10x harder than it is.

Healing is SWTOR is about as easy as it gets... Even if you had a ''healbot'' equivalent, you would still be doing the same thing for the most part.

And obviously, I would much prefer to actually play against opponents instead of fighting with the UI.

This game very, very badly needs an improved tab-target system (no, 'target nearest enemy' is not sufficient) and badly needs the ability to target people by health bars / nameplates.
If the Tank Dies, it's the Healers fault.
If the Healer Dies, it's the Tank's fault.
If the DPS Dies, it's their own damn fault.

Once again, haters are confusing their hyperbolic doomsday rhetoric with constructive suggestions?
