Pretty sure it isn't the point.

The End.

Look the "it is/it isn't" argument can be entertaining for awhile, but let's just leave it at that.

I understand the unlock but I do not understand why I HAVE TO MAKE A SURNAME! That is just out of the question for my character. Many companions don't have surname, why are we FORCED to do so?

Nameplates as they call them produce great amounts of Framerate loss when there are a lot of people around. Why aren't they customized even down to group and guild ONLY? Different color names too?

Its just a system to track progression.

STOP COMPLAINING THAT IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.

Christ...you'd get something for free and still complain.

Your character does not earn their surname; you, the player, earn your legacy name. The name applies to the player and thus to every character the players has (on that server).

The legacy name identifies the player, not the character.

Additionally, alowing two players to share a legacy name opens the way to griefing.

Agreed! I think this is the real problem with Legacy - people think it is a surname (because the screen says so) but it is not.

BW should allow us to have both surnames (which can be shared with other plaers) and a legacy name (unique to us the player). That way a Twilek and a Sith can have different family names while still belonging to the same legacy.

Single surnames seem perfectly reasonable to me.

First off, I don't want anyone using my surnames on their character. The legacy names now help to identify multiple characters as the same owner. When someone sees a character and my surname, they can know it's me.

Additionally, it's a function of the game, not of biology or upbringing. You'll notice we can also create an adult character without having to drive it through childhood, or maneuver its parents into conceiving. It's a reward for getting a character that far through the game to complete Chapter 1 of your story. Why is this hard to understand?

Once you've been rewarded in such a way, now all of your alternate activities provide bonus points.

And there are plenty of instances in reality where a single family gets split along moral lines, and even though they have the same name, they fought on different sides of a conflict, even against each other. There are plenty of examples of this from the American civil war alone.

I don't see any problem with the design of the system. Seems perfectly straight up and legit to me.

The only thing that seems weird to me about the legacy names is that both your darkside and lightside characters have the same one. Why would my utterly evil character share the name of my goody two shoes one? They should split it darkside only/lightside only for names perhaps.

No they are at the completion of act 1. Whether that is 30, 32 or 36 depends on how the person leveled.

The whole surname mess is really badly done.

All of your characters have the same last name, even thought that probably doesn't make sense for the various races.

And it's unique.

Brilliant work by the devs on this one.

1) It doesn't make sense that your character "earns" his surname. What does Joe Smith do in life to earn the privilege of using the name Smith? Nothing. It's his name, and he has it from birth. There's no explanation for why characters suddenly earn their surname 30 levels into the story.

2) There's no reason for the Legacy surname to be a unique name. The only reason to have unique names is to be able to identify player characters on the server. We already have that with the characters' first names. Creating a unique identifying first name, and then 30 levels later creating a unique identifying second name is redundant. There's no logical reason why surnames have to be unique when first names are already unique.

4) There's no reason why all of my characters on the server should have the same last name. If I create a human Bounty Hunter and then Twi'lek Jedi Knight, why would they have the same last name? It doesn't make sense, and there's no reason for it.

5) Creating your character's name is a big deal for many people. Having a name that you like is important. In all MMOs, we have to create a unique name for our characters at character creation. Sometimes after a day or two, a player may decide that naming her character "Funnybunny" was not a great idea after all. It's not a big deal since it's a low-level character, she can just delete it and start over. If however we choose a Legacy surname we later decide was a bad idea, we're screwed. The character is level 30 now, so deleting and start over isn't a fair option. And we're not only stuck with it on this character, but every future character we make on that server. Granted, it would be my own fault for making up a dumb name, but still it's not a good system if it can put people in that position. I've seen posts in the New User help forum from people with this very problem. I think it's going to generate many tickets to GMs requesting to reset the name so it can be changed to something better.

These complaints and more came up during the beta (for the few days testers had to respond to this system when it was sprung up at the last minute). The idea of a Legacy system that gives you incentives and bonuses for creating new characters after leveling one is a good idea, but this implementation of surnames is illogical, will create problems for people, is bad for RP, and it should be changed.

I suggest the following changes should be made:

1a) Let us create a surname at character creation.
1b) OR if we can only create a surname at level 30, let us change it if we want to, to avoid being "stuck" if we made a mistake.
2) Make surnames not unique, meaning two or more players can have characters with the same surname.
3) Allow us to make different surnames for each of our characters on the server.
I fully support and endorse everything in this post. I think it's stupid that surnames have to be unique...especially since they are only SERVER-WIDE, not ACCOUNT WIDE.

I don't think it was supposed to make any real sense but just something that appeals to people.
