I am contemplating which class to roll. Plus I think it would be interesting to see if there is a consensus amongst the community as to what the most useful / desirable classes are.

shouldn't you ask your OPS leader or are you talking about PUGs?
If pugs I'd say heals or rDPS prob sage if you can stand how they look thanks to ranged rupts and/or better aoe heals sloppy seconds heals = good for pugs

EDIT:
prob in order of desireability and ability to find groups via pug

Sage heals+ rnged interupts, battle rez
Sage DPS+ rnged interupts, battle rez
Rooper dps Van or gunspec mando both good(unlimited out of combat res, usefull if you almost wipe alot)
Gunsliger nice to have for buff and raid sheild at times + ranged interupts(bigest detractor can't spec anything other than DPS limits options)
combat medic if pugs decent about not taking avoidable dmg
Scoundrel med see above x2
melee DPS GL with that; only adviseable if your ranged classes either do not have or don't know how to use ranged interupts, other wise just more work for the healer
tank your more than likely gonna be spot filling for an existing ops grp; they will already have a tank
The only thing that should impact a players success/failure in pvpplayervsplayeris his/her skill not what they are wearing. Otherwise call it GvG gear vs gear, crunch the #'s in a calc, face-roll your keyboard, and go watch TV.polls by paulolesonhttp://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=164486pollhttp://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=164530

I'm not in a guild, I'm not 50, I don't have an OPS leader, and I'm talking about class desirability in OPs in general.

As least for my guild (and just about everything I read) heals and ranged DPS are needed far more than tanks or melee dps.

I'd recommend either a commando or a sage. If you are more inclined towards healer go sage...if you prefer DPS go commando.

JMO.

yea it can go either way I give dps sages a very slight advantage simply due to the range rupt, very usefull that
conversly multible stacked grav debuffs are a joy as well
