What will happen to Bioware in case of failure?

nothing will happen. they've already turned a profit off box sales alone.

if the game spirals into fail, they will keep just enough staff on to continue making money, and focus on the next game.

That isn't entirely true, they haven't completly made up the invested money. However 6 months in they should have a solid profit.

Let's be real here, the only WOW killer will be Blizzard. The lack of new content, years between expansions, and what, Pandas to look forward to will kill WOW long before SWTOR will? I played EQ for the first 4 years and they had 5-6 expansions, far more than WOW. But what killed EQ, a game that is just now going f2p, was not having content for the casual gamer. With WOW after each expansion it takes maybe a month or two to get to the new level cap, a couple more to tire of raids/dungeons if that's your thing and then unsub until the next expansion.

SWTOR will never be a WOW killer, but I seriously doubt it was ever intended to be by Bioware. If anything it will only be something to do instead of WOW. And for the gamer who never played an MMO prior to SWTOR it will be their entry point into the MMORPG.

Sure Bioware has some room for improvement and things to fix but the things I read on the forums suggest that many people have never played an MMO at launch prior to this. UO, EQ, WOW, etc have all had their issues at launch. whether this is crashing, queue times, servers down, nerfs, patch after patch etc. It is the nature of the beast. IMO SWTOR has been one of the smoother launches I have seen.

I read the forums and acknowledge that some percentage of users have serious issues with the game and that surely skews perception but I work with nearly a dozen subscribers who have nary a problem playing. So it's clear that the game isn't broken for everyone. As a person who works in technology it is clear that BW has issues that are not universal which are much harder to resolve than ones that affect everyone. Time will tell if they get things straightened out.

So will BW fail? Maybe but it surely won't be in the next 6 months or even the next year. Will SWTOR fail? That depends on how BW keeps the user-base engaged and interested in this universe. Trust me after leveling several toons to max level on this game, if all there is to do is be a l33t d00d and raidz then I will be moving on to something else. If BW doesn't find a way to make this game more social than getting a new Social level, then the future of SWTOR is more in doubt as well. Fanboi I am not, but I am trying to keep an open mind, give BW a chance and reserve judgement for awhile while they work through the growing pains of being a new MMO, regardless of how long or robust the beta was. But this is not a free pass to continue to deliver a buggy product to the subscribers and I hope that BW is able to fix the flaws and provide a game that last for years to come. BW now is the time to step up and show what you are made of...

doesn't matter if this fails. ME3 will be great and they will start catering alot more to console gamers.

how can a game fail if it becomes profitable in 6 months (with the likely expectation that it continues on after that). How can it fail with an 85 metacritic rating by various gaming publications? Will it eventually be closed down, of course, but every multiplayer game will.

If those games can make it, Star Wars will too.

City of Heroes survived the cluster-duck that was the mission builder, where everyone started using it to power-lvl characters to max lvl within 30 minutes.

Star Wars is a diamond in the rough that just needs polishing. If this game doesn't improve after 6 months, I'd be suprised.
I played all those games from release except warhammer which I play on the table top and did not join because I was disappointed with the art style chosen and was sick of fantasy after wow.

CO was a gem but was never going anywhere all the fun is in making characters. But that in itself kept my sub.

Swtor is a much stronger product than any of those, so long as they keep the idea of a story based mmo central and dont panda to trolls to much it will do better than break even. As someone who raided strath this game at its start is equally enjoyable and full of potential. Give it time.

Me3 will be amazing. I'm only sceptical about the multiplayer.

On the flipside Bf3 was the second most dissapointing game ever, great but so buggy I uninstalled. Mw3 is the worst hence why my focus is on rpgs not fps this year.

They are already focusing on the next game, and the next after that for that matter i would presume.

Did these games fail to achieve the level of success attained by WoW? Definitely.
Did they fail to live up to the expectations of their developers/publishers? Most likely.

Did they fail to make any money and achieve some level of success? I doubt it .
And I agree 100% with you, indeed. Probably there is a little misunderstanding about the word "failure" in this contest.
Failure isn't only when you declare bankrupt and close servers. Failure can be in expectations too.
Honestly, do you think that SWTOR's goal is to "make some money, even if it's with internal store with micro transaction in a f2p game"?
Well, to be honest I don't think so.

This game won't fail but it won't succeed either. RPG players love it. MMO players want to like it but find too many glaring reasons not to. I think it will make money but nowhere near what was anticipated or possible.

Until Bio figures out how to test, patch and implement features that all other MMO's include at launch and in a timely fashion, the long term audience (which is the MMO audience) will jump on the first train to roll into the station.

There's no sense of urgency and I think many of us feel that none of the powers that be are even listening. Without competence in which to place our faith there will be little reason to support this game going forward.

I know that I personally already wish I could turn off the subscription and play it solo and I personally love MMO's.

Bioware has gone from one of the few companies many of us had faith in to the company we have little or no faith in... but I also realize they took a wrong turn in thinking they could take MMO's back to their inception.

They keep making great single player RPG and forget about MMO.

Which would be fine by me. I do like SWTOR a lot but feel like the MMO part of Bioware should be spun off completely from the SP RPG part. Still pretty nervous about an MMO being made by any part of Bioware.
