DCUO

AION

Age Of Conan

Guild Wars

DDO

That's just a few, and I'm not commenting on the success of those games, just noting the ones I am aware of, because you seam to think there are none, which is not the case.
I can think of at least a couple more off the top of my head. It's pretty common.

Not hugely up-to-date on terminology, but what do you call SWTOR?

A game that has around 50+ servers, all divided?

Is that "sharding"?

Whatever it is, I think it was a poor, poor design choice. Much rather have one huge server, with smaller servers branching off on planets each with a player-cap. So the entire playerbase can actually interact and play with one another.

Or way less servers, with an increase in server capacity.

So you don't run into planets with 15 people on peak time. (I play on Port Nowhere)

Right now this game feels small, isolated and lifeless. Pretty stupid for a MMO about Star Wars to feel like that.

That's my biggest issue. Because everything else can be fixed in due time. But truthfully, this game just kinda misses that "massive" feeling by a huge margin.

I got 6 Months, right now I'm pretty sure I'll stick it out. Who knows though? I'm pretty damn disappointed about an aspect of the game that doesn't really seem all that fixable.

One really has to wonder at the stupidity of the original questions. Why are flashpoints isntanced? Because they are structured around a story with a beginning, middle, and end for a party of up to 4 players. They are not intended for hordes of players running here and there just killing things at random.

I really have to wonder why this is not immediately apparent to anyone with the wit to operate a computer and find the forums.

precisely i think ppl are getting confused, instances are mulitlpe copies of the same area
as in dungeons for example.

obviously in wow and swtor all dungeons/fp are instanced, you couldnt manage
an mmo without them - so i assume the OP is talking about the world and not dungeons.

taking wow, azeroth is zoned, not instanced, theres only one copy of the lands.
u can fly from one end of kalimdor to the other, its one zone. the eastern kingdoms
is another zone.

swtor is instanced, in the imp fleet, you can change which instance u are in using
the world map.

EVERY MMO? Really. WoW and Rift don't do that. I am not gonna jump in deeper because fanboys are going to come up with excuses like "but they are divided by mountains!@2323!" Either way what matters is there shouldn't be any loading screens. I know the universe is massive and I wouldn't mind if they leave the transition from one planet to another same, but take out the loading screens. It's possible, but really depends on the ****** engine they have.

This is one thing I don't quite understand about servers and the "modern era".

I never played Eve, but I know they have 1 server, and regularly have 30k + concurrent online players. Guild Wars is a 100% instanced game, even so much as instancing main cities.

TOR seems to have had an opportunity (if they would have been innovative) to have very few, or even 1 per playstyle (PvE, PvP, RP PvE, RP PvP) servers.

We are on the FLEET. Why is there only 1 ship we can land on..on the fleet? Everywhere else we go, we get instanced, or if a particular planet hits a certain point, there's another version of it created (so you can have Balmorra 1 and Balmorra 2 in the current game, for example).

Why not just make 1 (or 4, in the case of the different playstyles) server, and have multiple ships in the Fleet? Say there are, currently, 200 servers - just a guess. I know that you can have 200 on one Fleet right now (and probably more), but most servers don't have that many (and many have under 50 in their prime time). Just combine all "servers" into one server, but have multiple named Capitol Ships that you pick one to "call home". Have however many capitol ships you need so one single one never crashes, and don't have the chat cross each, but allow people the opportunity to change their home base.

So, for example, a guild may form, and choose "The Defiant" as the fleet ship they meet on, and mark that as "home". But they actually would be able to travel from one ship in the fleet to another to recruit, or whatever, but would have to travel there in-game to use that chat (you could only use the chat on the ship you were on). Each ship in the fleet would be LIKE a server, but they'd not be 100% separate.

I'm sure there's many more details that need worked out, and I'm also sure the Hero Engine would struggle with something so radical, but you'd, basically, eliminate low pop servers.

What loading screens are the problem? You can roam a planet and not get loading screens. The only loading screens that come to mind are some elevators and space travel in its various forms. What exactly is all the whining about?

Drop the ignorance and listen to what I am about to tell you. Lets say there are 10 people online on my friends list and 4 of them need help with quests on different planets. Do you really think I am going to waste my time with 10 loading screens and those annoying useless instanced bays? Get real here, you can't defend every aspect of this game.
