You can do this in game, and many people are playing in mentioned above, make sure you choose resolutions your setup can support, including refresh rate...

Unsupported mode normally indicates that the refresh rate of the game differs from the refresh rate of your desktop and it's out of the maximum range that your screen can support. Most non-3d compliant screens these days are 60hz refresh which can be a bit of a pain with some games.

If it's an ATI graphics card that you are using, and you're connecting in using a DVI connector, there is a setting in catalyst control center under My digital flat panels, properties (flat panel) called reduce DVI frequency on high resolution displays.

Under my VGA displays, you can also enforce a limit of 60hz on the settings there.
