WoW pvp in the beginning was terrible. It was not possible to level. You were really slow, mostly everyone sucked. Just WSG???? After waiting in Queues forever, and to this day you still wait in queues forever.

This game is not bad at all to this point. I am a PVP only guy too, and I am not upset, however they need to spend more time on it and it really could be fun. I'm not level 50 yet, having fun pvp leveling.

SWTOR PvP is....

Unbalanced factionwise
Unbalanced class wise

Some servers see 1:8 republic vs empire

Melee classes are at a disadvantage over ranged classes in pvp. Nothing that is special to swtor actually. This problem seems to be an evergoing problem in many mmorpg's. Simply due to the fact that if you play melee you need to be very close to your target. who can run and gun. If they do up the damage of melee too much the run and gunners will complain that they get killed too fast by melee. So hard to balance actually...

Some classes are op or up...

An example is the Sentinel/Marauder class. While not broken or for that matter boring to play, this class is clearly up when compared to it's sibling melee class Guardian/Juggernaut. Currently the best pvp spec involves some degree of the focus tree for each of these classes and they each seem to be able to dish out just about the same dps.
Actually I often see Guardians/Juggernauts doing more dps in a warzone than the Sentinels/Marauders. That is propably due to the survivability of the Guardian/Juggernaut.
The problem in this case is that while they seem to do roughly the same dps, they definately don't have the same survivability. Sentinel/Marauder uses medium armour, has a 4 seconds invis who's runspeed boost is broken and a 5 seconds near invuln bubble. The Guardians have Heavy armour, Shield, higher defense chance and other kinds of bubbles that can improve their survivability.

This is just one example of things that don't seem balanced, but that said I actually think that SWTOR is delivering a very decent PvP experience and particularly when I factor in the age of this game. This game has barely launched so to judge it hard and even draw any kind of comparison to games like WoW or Age of Conan wouldn't really be fair.

I have great expectations for SWTOR and I trust Bioware to deliver just as good a gaming experience as ever....

ROFL.

That game is the reason why we have such terrible PVP today.

Gear grinds, point grinds, all reward zero risk, instanced minigames, blah blah blah... all designed to cater to MMO noobs and carebears.

And now every MMO since is trying to copy their garbage.

How about we take the training wheels off and get back to massively multiplayer pvp, that has meaning, purpose, excitement, risk.... and is based around player skill, not gear.

But yeah, SWTOR is just as bad, if not worse. RNG gear + Ilum + minigame grinds = lol.

No, its not the worst mmo pvp, not by a long way!

In terms of class balance, its one of the best I've played, every single class has access to multiple specs that make them good in pvp. All three archetypes are worth while in pvp

In terms of availability of pvp, its great for instanced pvp (quick queues) but pretty rubbish for world pvp. Still, during peak hours you can pvp quickly.

In terms of combat itself, it is fairly fluid but ability delays / bugs make melee harder than it should be. The combat is still flashy and fun and quite tactical, every class has CC to make things interesting!

In terms of overall design philosophy, its pretty poor. They stated during the hype that time to kill would be high but it really isn't, you die very quickly! Open world pvp sucks in terms of design, objectives and incentives. RNG bags suck.

So, to sum up the important parts based on my experience of PvP in TOR, LOTRO, WAR and SWG (pre-cu), going best to worst:

Class Balance:

TOR
WAR
LOTRO
SWG

Availability of PvP:

WAR
TOR
LOTRO
SWG

Combat Flow:

SWG
LOTRO
TOR
WAR

Open World Design Philosophy:

SWG
WAR
LOTRO
TOR

So, based on this ranking, I am generally pleased with TOR pvp but due to poor combat flow (ttk too short) and lack of open world objectives, TOR pvp at the moment is looking like a short term activity rather than long term fun. There is no reason to fight on Ilum or any other open world pvp zone beyond farming valor or completing dailies. SWG's class balance may have sucked and the pvp may not have been wide spread, but when you got in to it on a decent template it was damn fun, it took ages to die and being able to build and defend your own base gave you such pride!
Anstalt - lvl 50 valor 81 Shadow Consular

Currently retired due to poor design decisions within the game that have killed its longevity. Get rid of Hickman before he ruins the game completely!

n.

Although I hate that most lvl 50's have 50% more life than me, take less dmg and do more, I know that when I get the gear myself i'll be laughing as I still do rather well for a new 50

On the other hand though the random bag loot developer can jump off a cliff. I want a clear goal, not a muddy pool that could be 10m or 1000m deep.
